Cracked U joint, need help!

My U joint has cracked! Took my truck to the Dodge dealership and they are saying that it is smarter to buy a new driveshaft than replacing the U joint. Dodge said it will be 395$ for parts and labor if I go with the new driveshaft. Does this sound reasonable? I don't know what to do. Should I buy the new driveshaft or buy a new U joint??

unless your driveshaft is damaged i dont see why you need a new one sounds like a gouging plan by the dealer. the shaft can twist but i have had a drivetrain shop fix mine before for around a 100 bucks. i would check around before trusting the dealer

Well whats their ujoints worth for part and labor?? probably smarter for a reason, if its going to cost you $200 then i see why they would say its smarter.

Are you sure it's the u-joint that is cracked? If they want you to replace the driveshaft it sounds like the yoke is cracked.

I assume you mean rear driveshaft? If you have a 1-piece driveshaft, then it is 4 bolts out, pull the old shaft, slip the new one in, 4 bolts on and you are done. Not sure what is involved with a 2-piece shaft.

If you have the u-joint replaced there is more labor involved, which will need to be added to whatever the u-joint itself costs….plus might as well do the other(s) while it is out.
If you do go with the new shaft, make sure they give your old shaft back so you can rebuild it for next time you need a U-joint.

I dont know anything about it but some recent posts seem like that might not be a bad price esp from the dealer.

I don’t know man, maybe $150? Anything over $200 is probably too steep.

I pulled the shaft myself (front) and had a shop that specializes in shafts and axles do it- both joints and the ball/socket thingy for $150! US made joints too.

I was quoted $200 I think, at a tire shop, but their torch was out of service.

I bought an American made greaseable one for $40 and it wasn't too bad to install.

Here's a cheezy little vid of the process.
