Codes For Dummies

Can someone help here?
I have a 99 that the Torqe converter started slipping after putting a chip in the truck!! Lots of shops told me I need a tranny. Long story short I am putting a double disk converter in, on order should be in this weekend.
Yesterday the truck started going in and out of lockup weather in Overdrive or not. If you punch the go pedal and get it past the transition speed it will hold lockup, I have read lots of the posts here about codes and readers,

What do all the acronims mean?
APPS
PCM
IP
LP

Does anyone have an ides of what the tranny problem is I have 168K miles on it.
I was going to buy a OBDIICode reader will they work with the diesel truck?
This board seems like there are lots of people with a lot of knowledge to share.
Thanks
Grant.

There's a list of acronyms in the Tech Facts Section:

Yes, it will work, but it might not display all the codes.
The truck has two computers, the ECM for the engine and the PCM for the truck.
The PCM is what the code reader talks to, but the PCM doesn't communicate with the ECM very well to transfer it's codes to the reader, Dodge has a propriatary code reader that works with both computers, but it is big bucks.

Most auto parts stores will read the codes for free, but again, they have the readers that might not get all the codes.

Can not help you with you tranny prob but I think I can shed some light on these accs!

APPS = Accelorator pedal position sensor
PCM = Power train control module (this is the rigs main brain)
IP = Injection pump or VP44 on you truck (also know as VP$$)
LP = Lift pump (notorious for failure) pulls fuel from the tank to the injection pump.

PCM- Primary Control Module.
ECM- Engine Control Module.

Or something like that.

I replaced the VP44 mega buck pump in dec, I got one from oregon fuel injection for $1100, and changed the lift pump as well.
I can't afford a new truck so gotta keep this one going.
I think I will go to Auto zone for free code read out and go from there.
Thanks
For the help so far.

For the tranny problem, a lot of folks have remedied that particular problem by cleaning the battery terminals really good, and making sure both battieries are healthy.

If that doesn't do the trick, you can get a noise filter from DTT, the tranny upgrader, that might fix it.

What year is your truck? I think all trucks except the 1999 will spit out the codes on the odometer when you turn the ignition switch on/off/on/off/on and leave it on (not running). I'm not sure what model year they started that trick though.

PCM = Powertrain Control Module

Mine is a 99.
I went out at lunch and opened the hood before heading out for my daily whopper and wiggled the batt terminals and there was one loose one per batt, I did not have any tools so I just turned them back and forth a bit and then left and the problem seems to be gone. i will see on the drive home tonight.
I will be cleaning/tightening the terminals.???? go figure.
