Well said gieco. I know my mileage very well under many conditions so I use the odometer and the mental calculator all the time while I'm driving down the road. I also plan well in advance where and when I'm stopping for oil. I usually carry 2 - 5 gallon cans in the bed besides. If my gage even sniffs the 1/2 mark I stop.

I usually fill mine up when it gets to 3/4 of a tank. Lots cheaper.

I always tell my wife that 1/4 tank = empty so don't let it get below that. Of course she has only put gas in her car twice in almost 2 years, so I don't have to worry about it much.
The only time I ever ran out of fuel was in a borrowed van (friend with dealership owner) and the gauge said 1/2 and then flickered and then it started to die.

Ha-ha! I was thinking of this, among other "survival" add-ons to my truck. But I only have a short bed, and don't want to take up space with a tank. Thinking about another one under the bed...

I just set my tripometer when I fill up, then everytime it hits 300 miles I start looking for fuel. I usually only put in 20 gallons. so there is roughly 15 gallons left in the tank... and thats in a 12v.

Don't feel bad I sinned as well.Bought the truck and had a funny voice in the back of my head about if the fuel gauge was working or not, so I called the guy I had purchased the truck from to ask him. His answer was yeh it works but I have not driven the truck in a while, well that should have thrown up the red flag but no I kept driving until I ran out of fuel half way between Kentucky and Tennessee. Long story short (listen to the voice in your head or in my case the MANY voices).
