Broke down after straight piping this weekend
I have a 2000 CTD, Auto, 24v. As I left work today I was getting on the highway and it shut down as I was accelerating. I put shifted into N and coasted to the side of the road. It cranks over but doesnt start. I disconnected the batteries, tried to restart and had no luck. I straight piped my truck this weekend. What types of complications could I possibly be looking at? Help?
Not related to the exhaust first of all, so at least YOU didn't break something.
First thing to check is going to be fuel delivery. Unfortunately, your year (and many others) truck are plagued with lift pump and injection pump failures.
You will need to verify that you have flow at (after) the fuel filter canister. If so, you can truck cracking open one of the injector lines, the easiest one to get to. Having a buddy to lend a hand cranking would be nice.
At the very least you are most likely looking at a failed lift pump ($100). 9 times out of 10 though once that goes it causes damage to the injection pump (VP-44) which will run you around $1K plus install.
Good Luck.

Monitoring fuel pressure is VERY important for the health of your VP-44. After you figure out what is going wrong here, you will NEED to install a fuel pressure gauge so you can keep tabs on what going on. A drop in pressure signaling a weak or about to die LP can save you time and lots of money in the long run.
If you are somewhat handy with a wrench you can accomplish everything I have gone over up to and including the entire VP-44 replacement yourself.
(Do a search).

Thanks P.J... I'll do that search. I havent used this forum much but it sure is helping me out right now.
I just got back from towing it back to work. Checked the codes with the key technique. It flashed P-1693. Dont know what it is yet...
Luckily we've got some guys around the shop that work on our Tug boats. Im hoping they'll help me out. Im trying to put myself through school at the moment and moneys tight. Wish me luck.

I beleive P-1693 is just a code saying the ECM has a trouble code stored. It should flash the P-1693 and another......should......
1693 is what they call a "Companion" code, in short, it mean there ARE other codes stored in there. You will need to find someone with a scanner, the one you do NOT want to see is P0216, the VP-44 "death code".
Lots of times people get both the 1693 and 0216 at the same time.
You could be in trouble.........
Everything can be fixed though, (or replaced), so keep your head up.

...when you pull the other codes, i can predict they will be.... 1688 , 1689... sorry about that, but that is exactly how my vp 44 went . i pulled into a fuel stop in midvale ut . shut engine off, wouldn't restart.... the only code was 1693 , we then checked with a smarty and came up with 1688 and 1689.... a new vp 44 from industrial injection in slc cured my problem

I've read that sometimes even with the scanner; it'll fail to show certain issues, like wiring harnesses, etc.
Oh, the way I was stating it, the VP IS the worst of your worries. I mean, it's so common, I would almost put money on it. There are only a few things that can really make your truck shut off and not start again......
You should be able to find a re-man VP for right under $1K.
