Anyone heard of this before?

I cant figure out what is going on with my 01 cummins. My transmission only has second and third gear. I have no functioning gauges in the cluster either. Where the mileage is displayed it says "NO BUS", also in the outside temp display it says "CCD". I brought the truck to Blue Chip diesel performance only to be told they have never seen anything like this. They said that most likely there is a short somewhere.

Has anyone an idea of whats going on here? Any responses would be much appreciated.

Are you getting any codes with this?

Code P1687 = No MIC BUS Message
(brief description) No CCD/J1850 messages received from the Mechanical Instrument Cluster (MIC) module.

Sorry, right now I cant seem to find the previous posts that had more info on this.

Id start by checking all your connections in and around the intrument panel.

Fill out your signature completely. Do you have any modifications to the truck? It sounds like a bad electrical connector. Take them apart and put dielectric grease on all connections. It could be a short somewhere also as mentioned in previous posts.

Code1698 sent me to the body control module. I checked the connection there and got the gauges to work for about three days. This is when my transmission problems occured and the gauges went dead. I have plugged in different PCM's and body control modules from the same year truck and nothing works. This leads me to believe there is a short in the system somewhere?

Not enough info yet so this is a back to basics guess , get a hold of a wiring diagram and a componant locator and check all the grounds , I'm leaning towords a main computor ground , be careful about swaping computors before finding out more becouse if it is a short or bad ground-[when the computor loses its ground it looks elswhere and will more often than not burn up the computer] and if you put in a loner then you might end up with two dead ones.

Any componant that utilizes the "BUS" (communication network between modules) can cause this prob. That and numerous wiring issues could also shut down the BUS. Can't touch this one with a 10 foot pole without my DRB scan tool.

I worked with Dave Goerend over the phone to troubleshhot mine.
Has pretty much the same trans-related symptoms without the dash/gauge problem.

www.gbtransmissions.com

He had me runs several tests and report the results back to him.

We figured the sensor and solenoid in the valve body had gone south on mine.
It gave me the excuse to upgrade to a new Torque Converter and Valve Body.

HUGE difference.

At work scenario for "no bus" prob. Hook up drb and see if you can communicate with ANY of the controllers: ABS, CTM, OTIS, ECM, JTEC, ACM, Cluster. I then unplug each one (usually starting with the CTM) to see if communication comes back. Alot of times you can find the culprit by doing this. A prob in these or a number of sensors can cause the bus to go down. Not a real common prob, but have seen it. Sometimes you get lucky and find a cause right away, sometimes it takes the better part of a day.
