Adjusting bands, 478RE, adj. bolt won't stop ??

I was changing fluid to my truck and decided to follow instructions and adjust bands.
I started on front one, loosened the 3/4" locknut, then tighten adjusting bolt to 72lbs, but it never got tight.....
Bolt went almost all the way inside transmission and still didn't have 72lb, I adjusted torque wrench (Craftsman) to 20lbs and I had clicks until 30lbs, than that's it.

I backed out adjusting bolt to a point it looked the way it was before, but I am not 100% sure, truck drives fine, I haven't touched rear band.

Now what ?

I hope you're using an INCH pound torque wrench!

12 Inch pounds = 1 Foot pound so 72 inch pounds would be 6 foot pounds.

72 foot pounds = 864 inch pounds.

The correct spec is 72 inch pounds

Believe me, You're not the first one to make that mistake, and you won't be the last.

They should make instructions with one of these smileys with a hammer that jumps out of monitor screen and hits you on the head screaming READ WELL.....

Anyway, is there any damage to tranny now?

I adjusted front bands as per specs, I will do rear tomorrow.

Does it drive/shift OK?

If so, I'd think you're safe.

Yes it drives fine now, it holds 3rd gear a little longer than before, but I will finish it tomorrow and to an APPS reset.

Thanks again guys, you saved me.....I owe you.

The band on the 47 is pretty tough. If you would have made that mistake on a 46re you would have most likely bent or sheared the lugs off the band. Let's just say you "seated" the band before adjusting.

Well, actually deep inside myself there was that "voice" that made me not paying attention.
I couldn't hear it very well but after a lot of studying it it came up to me very clear.

It said: "Get a Goerend's....Get a Goerend's"

So my actions wer somehow justified....

But my Chief Financial Officer said no for a little while.

I guess I will have to try to "adjust" the bands again a little later.......

Actually I think I need a "torque fooler" or something that says "it's 72inch" when actually it's 7200lbs, so the tool gets the blame, not me.....

It wasn't me.....I didn't do it.....

When damage it's done....it's done.
