ABS/Brake light turning on

My 98.5 24v auto 4X4 QC (4WABS) has given me re-ocurring problems with the ABS and Brake light turning on. This is like the third time this happens to me. The dealer fixes it (no idea what they did), and then it reocurred again. Has anyone had the same problem as frequent as me. Any idea what I should tell the dealer, or how I should fix it once and for all. My ABS is not working, and it is really annoying me. Any help would be much appreciated. Thx.

Re:ABS/Brake light turning on

When I had trouble with my ABS and brake light, it was a bad speed sensor, located in the rear differential. Had it replaced, no more problems. When the lights are on, brakes work normally, but, you're right, the ABS system doesn't operate. I hope that this helps.

DeWain

Thanks a bunch DPG. I'm going to have a good talk with the dealership, and ask them what's really going on.

Re:ABS/Brake light turning on

If the speedometer only starts to read at 10 or 15 mph, the sensor is bad and that will fix your problem.

Re:ABS/Brake light turning on

I purchased my truck two weeks ago with the Brake and ABS lights on. I have not had time to figure out what is wrong so I am very curious to here what you find. Looks like this is a common problem from the amounts of posts on the topic.

Re:ABS/Brake light turning on

I've got 3 trucks total, and it's happened to all of them at one time or another. Twice from plowing snow, and snagging the wires that connect to the sensors in the front wheels. Check that first, if there's a cut, splice it. Also, if you do alot of off-roading, check to make sure those wires are tight and not getting bound up and/or pulled on. If they get pulled or snagged too hard, it can break the sensor. On all 3 of my trucks, it was caused by those wires.

Re:ABS/Brake light turning on

My '99 just started yesterday coming home from work, the ABS/Brake lights came on and then I noticed my speedometer drop to 0 at 25 MPH! Above 25MPH everything seems ok, could the sensor be the same problem on my truck, and where is it located on my 2500 4x4?

Thanks, Michael

Re:ABS/Brake light turning on

That is the sensor in the rear axle (or the wiring going to it)

Re:ABS/Brake light turning on

The rear axle sensor is only an ABS sensor and will not affect the speedometer.

The abs light comes on and the speedo only starts registering at 15 to 25.

My 1500 '98 abs & brake light came on and a week or so later
the speedometer stopped working below 20 mpg. It was
the sensor in the rear end.
