Angry ABS & Brake light illuminated - safe to drive???

Is there a way to check the ABS computer and/or proportional valve? For when pressing the brake pedal the valve stem in the proportional valve raises. Is this normal?? Checked fuses under hood and in the cab...all check normal. Unable to get to dealership over holiday weekend.

Thanks

Last time I had that problem, it was the vehicle speed sensor. The brakes worked fine, it's just that the ABS needs the speed sensor to function. My take is that if your brakes still work, you are safe to drive. Just bear in mind that you won't have ABS. By the way the mechanic said that nine times out of ten it's the speed sensor that is bad when the ABS light comes on.
Hope this helps

I had the same thing happen to a GMC. So, I took it out to a safe spot, got it up to 40 and slammed on the brakes. The brakes worked fine, no lock-up. It turned out to be the sensor mounted at the right front wheel.

Dead giveaway as to whether it's the speed sensor is if the ABS light is on and the speedo sits at 0 while you take off, then suddenly jumps up to like 20 once you reach that speed. Had that happen on my '99 ½-Ton... dealer would have cost me a bunch, but I got the part for something like $30 or $40 and did it myself... EZ job, takes 5 minutes... one bolt (assuming it's the same on the 2500).

Re: ABS Computer and Brake Light Illuminated on 99 Ram 4 X 4
Last week ABS and brake light illuminated, this week speedometer delayed reading speed until about 30 mph. Replaced differential speed sensor. Fixed!!!

Thanks to all for your input and information. Your input avoided yet another trip to the dealership. Cost for the part was $34.00, installed in about 10 minutes. Thanks again.
