99 loss of power ,no codes?
hello to everyone I'm new. Glad i found your web site!! i have a 99 cumins with 183000. past 2 days when i drive the truck sometime it runs good, turn off come back out of store restart and no power.starts fast and fine, but you cant seem to get it to pick up speed. changed filter, fuel looks good, put new lift pump 6 months ago. dont know alot about them. went to autozone and it showed no codes, check engine light has never come on.where do i start to trouble shoot?thanks phil
when i changed the filter 6 months ago when i turned the key back on it didnt seem to come on.like now what turns on the lift pump?shouldnt you here it on when you turn on the key? if it builds up pressure and stop why doesnt come on when i open the drain **** and empty out fuel? wish i a manual to troubleshoot any answer?
As you read on, you'll learn any time you have a fuel issue, the first question your going to be asked is have you checked the fuel pressure. Job one should always be installing a decent fuel pressure gauge. With the known lift pump issues and also knowing a bad lift pump will kill the expensive injector pump, if your going to keep this thing, it's something you really need to do.
So my first question needs to be: What's your fuel pressure? At idle? At speed? At wide open throttle?

well being i dont have any guages. what do you guys suggest i buy to test with or buy to mount for permanent fuel pressure ?yes i have to keep the truck for a while. work is bad in my area and laided off again. (construction)should i get any other guages while i'm doing this.i see this pilar post pods.if it is the pump , where should i buy it? i see one place has pumps and this fass system as a package.well i'll start looking myself.i'll check back later for answers.my brother wants me to fix his jeep being i'm off. thanks guys phil
I got an autometer gauge. 30 psi max. Ordered it from Autozone a while back. I removed one of the plugs on top of the filter housing and installed the sending unit there. Then I made my own little mount for it, ran the wires into the cab and plugged it up.
Having this gauge allowed me to see my lift pump started to become not as stong as I'd like it to be, so I changed to an Airtex LP. I ordered it at Deisel Distributers dot com. It came with everything you need to mount it several diffrent ways. It is sufficent for me, because I'm not planning on adding any wild injectors or trick stuff.
It gives me about 16 psi at idle and about 12 at 70 mph, probably 10 at wot.
I wouldn't make any purchases untill you've got a FP gauge on it and see what's going on. And you might as well get one that's mounted permanently so once you get all this worked out, you can use it as I did to avoid any further issues.

well didnt get to check fuel pressure but got it on a tester.drove it and it went dead petal.. floor it and wont get out of its own way. only thing that we found(no codes came up)the map sensor showsno voltage return, and no boost.ever thing in other number were good.checked the map sensor had 4.89 volts feeding the map sensor. I guess thats what tells the ecm to give more fuel and timing?tomorrow i will replace that first.then go from there. any input about what i found?? thanks guys phil
Check Fuel pressure. The dead pedal is not a good sign. I know this sounds dumb, but is the turbo spooling, or is it just sitting there. Pull off the air intake tube and see if you can spin the turbo with your fingers. Good luck,

ok hear we go!! pulled air intake off turbo and turbo spins free.started truck and watched it spin. hear comes the fun part.dodge teck thought it was the was gate stuck open. another diesel guy told me that being no codes are coming up on the scanner , it's a mechanical issue.so i removed the accuator from the waste gate on the turbo.put air to it and it moved in and out. the waste gate moves free.put the accuator on seeems to get sticky, not sure so i took it off.started truck, power braked it, brought it up on spool on the turbo, kicked in!! then had it off tried it again it wouldnt pull the truck over 1500 rpm and wouldnt go anywhere.thats with accuator disconnected!! now what tells the truck to give more fuel when the turbo spools up ?? the boost sensor? if that it then i think the boost sensor is not working all the time. what else would let it work with no accuator hooked up then ?? something tells the ecm to give more fuel. so this is where i stand. I need to haul the boy scout trailer this week end for summer camp.i dont want to throw parts at it cause i'm laided off, that and i dont work that way!! you should be able to trouble shoot it down to the part. sure could use some help. thanks guys phil
Are you still getting DP while driving? If so next time it does it, turn key to off (not lock) then back on, this resets the injector pump and it should run right (for a little while) If it's a pump problem. The VP44 (your injector pump) can be going out and not through any codes. if yours has 183k on the first pump then you've done alot better than most. The LP goes out and the IP can still pull fuel thought it, but not an eungh to cool it, this is why a incab fuel pressure gauge is a must in a 24v truck. I agree with you in not thoughing parts at it, check everything out frist, but in the end my moneys on the IP. JMO
It cost zero dollars to do a volume test. Disconnect a fuel line after the pump and route it into a clean container, stick a bit of tube on it if you want, bump the starter to get the LP pump to run for the 25 seconds and measure how much fuel gets delivered in that time. It must not be less than 1.33 liters if not change the LP pump.
ok got a fuel guage on it. 14 psi at idle, 10 psi cruising WOT 6to 7psi.,but here we go again.!! the truck wouldnt pull over 1500 rpm up to the station, coming home it was like someone turned on a switch it ran like a crazy dog.I dont understand the off and on of the problem?? thanks guys i'll check back phil
