OK this is a 97 Cummins Turbo Diesel and would love to find out that it is as simple as an adjustment on the IP but I looked and looked and felt around and could not find an adjustment screw on the back of that pump, I found the linkage but nothing that resembles a nut or bolt.
I am looking in the wrong place, could this IP not be adjustable?
What are symptoms of overflow valve and lift pump? Similar?
I am begining to think the dealer wants me to buy his $300 part for no reason. I am due back in the morning and want to be armed with info.

The idle will drop at the linkage wears the the bolt leaves and indent on the linkage. My 95 needed an adjustment and so did my bro's 97.

Its a simple fix and is where you should start.

Have someone run the throttle while you look at the pump which will make it easier to find.

It may be something else but always do the easier stuff first.

Good Luck

I still think you have low fuel pressure, overflow valve, clogged filter or lift pump being the cause.
What Bill said. Pump and linkage wear is pretty much the norm on the 12 valve so adjustments are required.

Just to add one more variable, if the throttle cable has not been updated, that mey also be a problem. The original cable frays and stretches.

OK gang, on the information gleaned from your posts I decided to bag the dealer recomendation and take it to an independent.
He drives a dodge himself, has it all buffed up and knows diesels
He checked fuel pressure and it was good. I mentioned the the TPS and he confirmed it was not the issue, ("computer crap").
I left it so he could adjust the cable

I did have the throtle cable recall done about 10K ago.
Thanks again , I will let you all know the outcome.

Well as they say best laid plans. Adjusted idle up and seemed to be the cure, however I could still stall it by reving the engine in drive or reverse with my foot on the brake and then letting gas pedal off. It would shoot down in RPM's below 300 and die.
The mechanic fooled with it for over an hour and tried to adjust it up some more but to no avail. He mentioned a governor issue, which of course, as I understand it , is tied to the TPS.
He confirmed good gas delivery and pressure
He suggested TPS as well
Any other suggestions????

do you have an aftermarket trans in it? Cause I thought some guys were having problems with real tight converters killing the motor like your saying.

The governor in the P pump is entirely mechanical, it has nothing to do with the TPS. You might have to go to a Bosch pump shop to tune the pump. Pulling the pump and checking out all internal adjustments, cylinder balance, and timeing on a pump stand will cost you $400-$500. But you will get the engine timed. Go for 15.5 degrees. Ask the pump shop if they will time it for 15.5 degrees before you start (over the original specs of 13.5 degrees or thereabouts).

I am at a loss, replaced TPS and of course like you folks said it made no difference. Cables adjusted, and no change.
I even changed fuel filter just in case. The symptoms remain that I can still stall it by reving the engine in drive or reverse with my foot on the brake and then letting gas pedal off. It shoots down in RPM's below 300 and dies. If I make a quick stop from speed it dies (not good while hauling)
I also noticed that if I turn the air on and of it drops the idle as well to the point where it could almost die. The idle in park is less than 700 RPM.
What else could it be ? Electronics, IP pump
Gotta have this truck ready to go by Friday
Lost and concerned
