If this is a cold fluid issue, just run a winter front on it. When I had my 95 , in cold weather-single digits- it would cool off at highway speeds and down shift. I could get oput and put a towel in front of the radiator with it running and then go again. It was ok till I stopped and , of course, the towel would fall out. It is an easy test.

Did you move the sender for your gauge?
If you put it where the stock one was it will read the highest temps in the system. This is the best place to have it.
Trans temps can vary quite a bit depending on how cold it is outside and if if you are running with the TC locked up or not. I generally see 120-200F and pull over to let it cool in N when it reaches 250°. If it's cold out and you go straight to highway speeds with a cold tranny it may not even reach 100° or register on a gauge that doesn't go that low. With the TC locked very little heat is generated. Stop and go will make it register closer to 200°.
