01 Acted like a Gas engine running out of gas

Stumbled one time then recovered. I thought it was just me. went another 2 miles up the hill and right before the top it lost power and died. Won't start not sure what a diesel engine sounds like when it canks and doesn't start but it sounds like a gaser with the timing off and shakes ALOT when cranking. Checked the lift pump and it is running. (may not be pumping but it is running) drained fuel from the water drain. Gauge shows 1/4 tank OH shows 86 miles DTE. Checked the fuel injection relay (good) The Ignition grid relay(good) No codes! Help new to diesels and don't know where to begin looking. I just waited 3 hours to get towed back to my house.

Just because the fuel pump is running doesn't men you have fuel pressure. A fuel pressure guage would help. You can loosen an injector line and crank it to see if you have fuel. I have seen VP44's die without any codes. I also have had fuel filters clog up.

Just for grins you might also try dumping about 5 gallons into your fuel tank, it is also possible that the fuel gauge is innacurate and you are out of fuel.

DITTO, especially if going up a hill. My ex-inlaw's gauge has died 6 times, they finally just started filling up every 400 miles.

Yeah I was planning to try dumping 10 gallons of Diesel in the tank just for the heck of it. As for a Fuel Pressure Gauge, I havn't even finshed PM'ing the truck and making a list of whats wrong yet. One of the first things on the list is Gauges. How do I locally source parts to put a FP gauge in? Is there already a fitting or place to connect it?

Thanks,
Kirk

Ok so I dumped 5 gallons in and still no love. I then changed the fuel filter. nada. I am going to do a volume test on the LP today, which is pumping but I wanna verify that it's pumping enough. I have a feeling that I am now a member of the "My LP killed my IP" club. Haven't had time or money to put a fuel pressure gauge on yet because i am planning to go with a all-in one type gauge that does fuel pressure like the QZilla pulse.

Ok so I cracked injector lines 1, 3 and 4 and bumped the engine and let the LP run and I got fuel out of #4 but not #1 and 3 I then closed 4 and bumped again and got nothing from 1 or 3 hmm. Havn't done a fuel pump volume test yet as I can't find a container to measure what comes out without getting the wife PO'd at me, but it is gushing out of the filter housing water drain if I bump it with the drain open. Now my batteries are dead. grrr.

Get a charger, you will need to crank it over to bleed the injector pump if you ran out of fuel. Just bumping the starter won't do it.

ok working on charging the batts. while I am waiting I was going to install the FP gauge. I picked up an Autometer one with the -4 AN fittings. I got a high pressure line from work 18" -4AN female on both sides but it is teflon lined. whill this screw up anything? WIll the diesel eat through the teflon?

Thanks,
Kirk
