I bought my first Dodge because it had a Cummins.
The Cummins has never let me down and neither has the Dodge. If Chevy got the Cummins and Dodge got the Duramax, I would probably Buy the Dodge.
You have a Chevy Duramax you know how good it is. But you will never know how good the Dodge Cummins is until You try it.
Would you be looking at buying a Duramax with a manual???

I've owned all 3 now. I have had the best mileage out of the Cummins. My brother is on his 3rd Dodge Cummins now. He started with a 2000, went to the 2004 and then went back to a 2002. My dad is still fighting to get all his problems fixed on his new Duramax. The dealerships are having troubles figuring out what all is wrong, but its a long line of electrical problems. At work, we have the new Ford 6.0L. We depend on it, and well, its just not that dependable! Getting towed to the Ford house 3 times with less than 3k miles is embarrassing! I'm on my 5th Dodge and have never had the problems with them, that I have with Ford and Chevy. My next one will be another Dodge. I put mine in the mud, snow, rain, and under a load a lot. It still has yet to leave me sitting because it broke down. Suit yourself. I'd say if you have the money to spend, buy a Ford or Chevy. Then you'll have something to do with your money like constantly fix them. Anyway, that is my 2 cents worth.

Have you ever heard the term "MORE MONEY THAN BRAINS?"

This is why I'm soing the research. I don't want to have to put tons of money into a brand-new truck just to get it working "right."

AND at the beginning I believe that I said that I would give anything a try. This means that I would give anything a chance. That said, I'm not into the whole truck brand war where chevy guys say that they'd never ever buy a dodge. So don't even bring that into this conversation/thread. I'm just trying to find out some useful information about Dodge. I know that the Cummins is a great motor. But as said before, what about the rest of the little $h!t. Like seals or bearings going out?

I'm not saying that the information so far hasn't been great. And you've all convinced me to go take a test drive (at least). I understand that the Cummins and the 6-speed manual are reliable. But what about the actual Dodge parts of the truck?

They are good trucks.

When I went looking for a diesel, I could not see getting the other two question marks when I could get a cummins. I was skeptical about the chrysler product though. But to my suprise, I've had no trouble with my truck.

The 96 is my second dodge ctd I had a 93 sold it with 180,000, dad had a 89 and sold it with 220,000 my brother has a 97 with 225,000 and my 96 has 177,000. Both the 97 and 96 have had 1 ball joint apiece go bad, one front wheel bearing go bad, both after 160,000 miles. My track bar went at 130,000 the 97 has the orignal. The 89 blew a headgasket at 195,000 miles. Other than that they have held up very well. I abuse mine in the field. I have had both front wheels off the ground at least a foot, Pulled trees down, buried front in mud, and drove over 40mph in 4wheel high in a open fied. All in all I think the truck has held together pretty well. My belife is that all three have there problems and most of it comes down to personal prefrence.

here is a funny:
when we went to the local credit union that the wife used to work for the loan officer told me that an '07 "Dodge" with 12k as a down wold loose it's value too quickly and he didn't want to finance it for us; so we went across the street to another CU and they about snatched our arm off to get the deal @ 4:45pm on a Friday afternoon and wanted to know if we were going to need more than what we had taken a loand out for.

Dodges are fine. There is nothing wrong the frame or the interior.

When I got mine, the bank said no, it's not worth the loan value. They said it was only worth about 6k. I said WHAT ? The engine alone is worth almost that much...then I asked them if they ran it's value as a gas or diesel.

When they ran it again as a diesel, they told me I could have borrowed 4500 more than I needed.

I'll pass on what a friend of mine told me and he is a big GMC/Chevy fan. If you want a gas truck buy a Chevy but if you want a diesel then you must buy a Cummins. Just remember that a Cummins is made for work. Now if you want a go to town screw around and buy groceries truck then buy any thing else and not a Cummins. Anyway just go buy what will make you happy and to hell with what anyone else thinks.

You would probably be satisfied with a Dodge or a Chevy D-Max. I also own an 87 6.9 that still runs good. I am not brand loyal either. The one and only reason I have a Dodge is because of the Cummins. That being said, I am more than happy with the ride, steering and rest of truck. I drove a D- Max manual and liked it too. But I liked the CTD better. Drive them all and buy one you like the best. The Dodge Dually is best looking one to me. Another reason I got the Cummins is I like simplicity, and in-line-six is inherently smooth and has a lot less moving parts. Just look at the crankshaft of the Dodge, looks like something out of a dozer. Good luck, they are all mechanical and they will all break.

Can you even buy a Chevy with a manual transmission? I'm pretty sure you can't get the 6 speed manual in 2007 models. I personally wouldn't buy a truck with independent suspension. I think Ford's look the best, but I wanted a truck with a real truck engine and a solid front axle. I really liked my Powerstroke, but it was definitely not as dependable or as easy to work on as the Cummins. If you want a truck that rides and drives like a car you should get a Chevy, if you want a real work truck you should buy the Dodge.

If your looking for a towing rig then the cummins is definately your best route, both make good trucks but when it comes right down to it I dont think many would argue that the cummins w 6 spd is the best truck out there for towing

My father doesen't like Dodges , and frankly it would probalbly be bad news if I bought one . So here's your chance to tell me why I should buy a Dodge. Money is no object. I wouldn't get the automatic tranny. I'm a hunter and dirt biker, so I spend much of my time in the dirt, so 4x4 is a must .

So, lets here it. My main question though is about reliability. If the motor is a cummins, then what left on the truck is DODGE ?
First off, who you pleasing here? You or your pappy? Second, you said it: " I'm a chevy man." In which case I don't see why you are even considering anything but a Bowtie.
