Do your numbers factor in the extended oil change intervals? Let's take my BMW for instance (not using my truck because I have not decided how long to run the oil yet, as it will be determined by analysis). Let's say the dino engine oil costs 2 bucks a quart x5 + an oil filter, 15.00, changed at 3,000 miles, total 35.00. Add whatever figure you want here for labor cost.
Now, Amsoil, at 7 bucks a quart, x5, plus a filter, 15.00, plus another quart of oil, 7.00, + another oil filter, 15.00 (I chaneg the filter at 12.5K), total: 70.00. Add whatever figure you want here for labor cost, and don't forget the labor for the filter change and adding 1 quart of oil at 12.5K.
Now, take the fact that I run the oil for 25K in this car, divided by 3K if I ran dino oil, that's 8.33 oil changes, for a total cost of 208.33, plus tax and labor, verses the synthetic at 70.00 plus tax, labor and superior protection of your engine.
If you assume the labor cost to be the same for all oil changes, you save 6.33 oil changes with the synthetic. (I assumed one entire oil change of labor for the filter change at 12.5K).
As I have said, I know the manufacturers recognize the superior lubrication and heat dissapation qualities of synthetic oil, but I don't know about how much better synthetic is. If you run extended change interavls the synthetic makes sense and saves money.

Run anything in the engine with a CI/CH designation. Run anything anywhere else that's synthetic and made by a recognized company, but follow the instructions in your manual.
Anyone object to those recommendations?

Thumper,
I concur with the SYnthetic recommendation.
My 04 is getting ready to change over at 7500k. I'm going to run the AMSOIL 15-40W Marine Diesel oil (bought 4 gallons at $60.) I've purchase the GENO's 4.2.1 kit, less air filter for $58 and it comes with 4 Stratapore LF 16035 oil filters and 2 FS 19579 fuel filters. I'm going to change the oil filter at 7500k, top off oil, and then change oil filter, oil and fuel filter at 15k. This is Maintenance Schedule A for none-California engines on the 03/04 models. The dealer wants $70.00 every 3750 miles for an oil and filter change...They think Schedule B is for all trucks....Go figure that one....You can do the math on how much money this will save.
Just changed the drive line out on Saturday (6800 miles) to AMSOIL Series 2000 75w-90 frt&rear ends, ATF in Transaxle, and REDLINE MTL in 6 spd....
OH, I'm not recommending any specific oil (s) or manufactures ...just what I did....
