Uh oh...the Ford keeps impressing me....
The 7.3 is a very good engine, my family had a 6.9(very underpowerd), a 92 7.3, a 92 7.3 with banks turbo kit, and a 97 ps all of those trucks were very reliable I was actually trying to find a 95-97ps 5sp before I got the truck I have now. I don't think people give the older fords the credit they deserve but ford sure has messed up with their 6.big problem motors. Just my 2 cents.
The 7.3 powerstroke is a solid engine, and they are pretty good trucks. I am just really partial to an I-6 diesel. Honestly, a 7.3 powerstroke would likely give you less problems than a 24 valve cummins because of the VP 44 and lift pump issues

the 7.3 liter as Eric said. My uncles had them (now they have the 6.4s
) and they were trouble free, and not stock either. Sorta compare them to the old faithfulls, they will go a long ways if properly maintained.. Rick
although I agree that those years are much better than the new stuff.
