Re:Texas Diesel Emissions?

The one time I tried to use a new local shop (in the middle of town) the lady doing the inspection failed me because I did not have a muff. She proceeded to inform me that I also didnt have a Cat, BUT in Texas, she stated, it is legal to not have a catalitic converter. I dont know if this helps but I tried :.
BTW: the next day I rolled into my usual shop and he slapped a sticker on it no problem 8).
By the way, Fords DO have cats. Late model anyways. I believe they started in 2001??? However, they are appearently a true 4" though so you can have it added back and not restrict to less than 4". A lot of guys add them back to tone down that turbo shine. Otherwise, with aftermarket turbo back exhaust it sounds like a jet plane.....
I could be wrong, but I believe the Fords use a 3" or 3.5" exhaust and not a 4". I don't fully understand why our trucks don't have cats, but I'm certainly not complaining.

::ON EDIT::
The quote above "The inspection of the exhaust emission system shall not apply to motor vehicles altered and modified to use only a fuel other than gasoline" I found is the 04.20.00 DETAILS OF INSPECTION. However, I did find this "http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/ which down at the botton states "Gasoline powered. Diesel powered vehicles are exempt from the emissions standards, but are still required to have the annual safety inspection." It's the last item in the list of criteria for which vehicles are required to have Emissions tests done.
So....since the emissions testing isn't required on the diesel does that mean the cost of the inspections are cheaper or do they still charge the same amount??

Hoss,
I think it's about $17-18 for the safety inspection.

I was told the "cat" was 4" which made it easy to add back to aftermarket exhaust. However, I loked at an '04 the other day I I couldn't tell that the cat was any bigger than the 3" or 3.5" whatever the exhaust is. :-

You only pay for the safety inspection, not the emission testing. Something I'm still not sure about is as part of the safety inspection they "check" emissions equipment for tampering or removal. Sure wish the regualtions/requirments for diesels were clearly written somewhere. :

Re:Texas Diesel Emissions?

The 24v engines did not require catalytic converters. Never had one from the factory. What all those highly qualified inspectors are looking at (on a stock system) is the resionator.They dont know the difference. I went through this myself. We argued about the truck never having a cat. So I asked him for a phone book, found the number for the local dealer. I told him to call and talk to the parts dept. and try to order one. With a little hesitation he did. He asked what the cost was. After he hung up I asked him how much! By this time he was a little embarrassed and told me I was right, sorry.

The '03 trucks don't even have a resonator do they?? If I recall correctly from looking at mine all it had was a muffler.

Re:Texas Diesel Emissions?

My 96' Dodge had a CAT from the factory (had being the keyword). We now have straight exhaust on it and have had no problem getting it inspected in rural areas. BUT, I was told at the last inspection that legally, since this pickup had a CAT from the factory, I would need one to pass inspection at most places. I'm not sure if the 95' had a CAT or not. I believe there is an emissions sticker under the hood that may indicate that it had a CAT.

All I know is that my truck didn't COME with one, doesn't HAVE one right now, and will NEVER have one. Period.
