Just saw on MythBusters on the Discovery Channel. They tested the tailgate myth. Turns out you get better mileage witht he tailgate up. Just thought someone here would like to know.

 

i did not see that episode, but how does he figure that?

 

That episode is still on for the first time here. I'm watching it with my laptop in my lap. They just stuck a shotgun in the dirt like 6 inches and are about to shoot it. Hmmm wonder how thats going to work out.......BOOOOM lol

this has been known for a while now, since well before mythbusters. people still drive around with their tailgates down, though.

 

That show is the best!!

 

With the gate up a Vortex is created rolling over the truck into the bed to the back of the cab. It is a slow spinning vortex that pushes the air coming over the cab back up enough to go over the tailgate. I just thought it was cool to watch. They showed it with a water current test with oats inthe water.

 

This one was kicked around a month or 2 ago. TAILGATE UP.

Plus as a added bonus you dont sandblast your tailgate when its up

 

Or have the straps break while it's down and riding around on your bumper for 10 miles without you knowing it.

 

Exactly why trash you have in the back will fly around with it up, but down it barely moves.

 

REAL trucks don't need a tailgate!

 

Consumer Reports tested that theory about 10 years ago and proved that tailgate up is better. MythBusters isn't on to something new here.

 

I thought that was common knowledge??
