sticker shock
you cant buy them new any more. the cheapest way to get a "new" truck is to wait for somebody else to take it off the lot. after that they are almost half price, or at least reasonable.
the worst part is you cant fix them your self. sure you can change a part here and there. major repairs are not possable without a computer of some kind.

All these new trucks cost this much because people pay it. If everyone would stop paying that much, the dealers would be forced to drop prices. How many people do you see that focus on the final cost and interest rate? Everyone I see just worries about the amount of the monthly payment. And finance companies are letting people drag out loans for a long long time. now.
Along this same path of new vehicle cost...a friend of mine lives by this philosophy...
"these days, it's not how much it costs outright, it's how much I pay per month"...followed by "I will never keep it long enough to own it out right"...
He recently purchased a 2012 Dually Laramie loaded...
His monthly payment is $1137.00 for five years!!
That's before he drives it or insures it...

!!!I'd like to know how people can justify something like that. The total cost of payments for that truck, if he keeps it for the full 5 years, is $68,220. For a pick up truck. That will more than likely never make that guy a dime. Even if you have money to burn, (which he obviously doesn't or he wouldn't have payments), it doesn't make sense. It's like paying $500 for a single meal in a restaurant.
) Its earning about 40 bucks a day, or a lil over a grand a month. I also have the added benifit of tax deductions for work purposes. My truck is actually a tool that earns its keep. A really nice, rather expensive tool, but a tool nonetheless.

I have the window sticker from my 2001.5. It has everything but clearance lights and came with manual flip out tow mirrors which took money off the top. Still it was priced at $45,552.
I bought a Crew cab GMC HD with the 6.0 instead for $31,229 and put 53K on it. In 2005 I found my 2500 with only 48K on it and got it for $21,900 out the door (got 16K for the GMC with Steel Commercial Gemtop on it) . I am very happy with it regardless of some of its shortcomings, all of which are nicely covered by aftermarket suppliers.
Couldn't justify 55K for a new truck even if I hit the lotto!!

Six, just looking at the factory window sticker for Greenie, my 97. She has everything except the clearance lights and leather, 32,900 even.
Scary how much they went up between 97 and 01.......

Crazy isn't it??
Dad's 94 V-10 reg cab drew 18 something IIRC and he was torqued over how much more it cost than our 84 Chevy 1/2 ton, which I remember was 11,500, cause he bitched about that for the ten years prior to buying the RAM!!
I sooth him by reminding him that the RAM was sales tax exempt since he bought it in Montana so he thinks he's king again......

I've seen the ST models, 4x4 crew cab cummins, optioned up for an ST for around $36 grand new.
The new ST is probably nicer in every way than my 07 Laramie.
Do I want a new truck, no. But 36 grand is cheap to me.
I make fairly decent money, I could buy a new 55 grand loaded out truck every year no sweat but I don't need all that nice stuff in a work truck.

After you pay taxes on it 55K doesn't go too far. The economy is getting kinda spread thin now days.
Discussion for a different thread though.
I'll tell you one thing though, I bought a $3,000 chevy truck the other day to keep miles and scratches off my 07 diesel. I really don't want a new truck, I don't get the urge to buy one and I've test driven both Dodges and Fords.
