New Tires?
New Tires?
Thought I would post in the general section on this.
I am in the process of buying a 98 2500 4X4 that will be needing tires in the near future and was wondering what everyone was running.
The truck has a leveling kit and running 305 tires on it.
I will be using the rig as a daily driver, tow rig and maybe do some snow trips.
It will see some dirt/muddy roads but no major wheeling.
I want to get a decent all around tire that I may get some milage out of and won't break my wallet. (this may be an oxymoron)
I thought about maybe going a little smaller but the truck may look a little odd with smaller tires on it.
Thanks for looking at this post and any help would be great.

Proably one of the favorites is the BFG AT KO, not inexpensive, but excellent tire. I think the new Goodyear silent Armor also have been working well, quite, kevlar constuction.
There are some Coopers that have well liked and the Michelins(most pricey of all?)
Do some tire searches, lots of reading material. Also do some shopping at discount, NTB, Sams/wallyworld/, pep boys. Quote prices, negotiate. Check tire wharehouse on-line. Some of the house brands may be Ok, you have to do your homework.
Good luck!

Oxymoron - you said it there!!
Betcha open a big ole can 'o worms with a question like 'Which tire is best?'
I think tires certainly are one area where you truly 'get what you pay for', hence you'll probably not find a 'good' tire for a correspondingly 'good' price, right? I have had 2 complete sets of BF Goodrich Commercial T/A's(your 4x4 should do as well w/Traction T/A KO mentioned above) on 2 trucks and really liked them. For all the reasons you can imagine - except price! I just ordered another pair today in fact for the front of my current truck, 215/85/16 Load Range D cost $134/ea. Plus whatever is likely to bring them up to right @ $150ea.
It has been my experience they ride smooth & quiet, drive good(no squishy feel, slippery in the rain/snow, or squealing on corners etc), and deliver good fuel mileage. Last set went nearly 50k+ delivering rv trailers and still had more than 1/2 tread. Same for the front pads/rear shoes(I swear it's true!). Not speculating they would have gone 100k by any means, as that last 1/2 tread always seems to wear alot faster, but still surprised me!
I attribute this to A:Good alignment/steering components B: Good maintainence ie proper inflation constantly(I always run my tires maxxed recommended psi) C: Easy driving habits like keeping my speed down at all times(I just don't ever exceed 65mph - and only 55mph - when towing> plus no racing/fast corners!)
D:Plain old good luck(probably the biggest factor). As always, my experience may be atypical and yours may vary!! Good luck whatever choice you make, drive safely!
