Need some help with the lingo...

- 12v vs 24v? I suspect this indicates system voltage.
- VP44?
- CR, VE?
- CTD? Maybe Cummins Truck Diesel?
- VP? Vice President?...probably not...
- Common Rail?

Apparently some of these things are good and some are bad.

Getting ready to buy my first diesel. Starting my research. Getting excited.

Ahhh!
12valves vs 24 valves.
VP44 fuel injection pump

So far, so good.

madhat 03-02-2010 12:10 PM

CR= Common rail. Injection system used in 03+ trucks.

CTD= Cummins Turbo Diesel

VP= VP44, type of injection pump used in the late 2nd gens. (not really the pump you want)

VE= Style of pump used in the early first gens (I think) Also called a rotary pump. (kinda shaky on that answer)

Keep askin, we'll keep answering. :) Welcome to the DTR!

I had trouble with some of the lingo at first, too. This is the first time I've done the forums and what not, but so far I've read plenty of interesting stuff and everyone seems to be very helpful.

You really have 37's and stock suspension, do they rub? I just got my '07 and haven't had the opportunity to play with tires yet.

12 v and 24 v is two types of cummins engines the 12v stands for 12 valve meaning the head has 12 valves 1 intake and 1 exhaust valve per cylinder.. a 24 valve has 24 valves in the head 2 intake and 2 exhaust valves per cylinder...the 12 valve is also mechanically injected by a pump called the p7100 or is also referred to as a p pump and was only used in years 94 to 98 the older 12 valves had a bosch ve pump...the 24 valves are injected with a vp44 which is an eletronic pump...ctd is cummins turbo diesel...Cr stands for common rail which is on the 03-current 5.9L and 6.7L dodge rams...a common rail is a fuel rail that is always pressurized and feed all the injectors and the computer tells the injector when to fire...VE is the old style injection pump found in 89 to 93 12 valves

I think someone should make a sticky for common acronyms we use. Mods, I'd be happy to write one up if you'd like to sticky it. :)

There was a page on here with a long list of terms but I don't know where it went.

Knock yourself out! Do it in the general diesel discussion forum, we'll let everyone add to it, and I'll edit it as needed. PM me if you need any help with it.

I'm glad that I can hopefully return some help to someone on the board, as other members have helped me a ton over the last several years. :)
