It seems to me that it is, just based on observation.

There aren't that many CTD shortbeds.

If you have a CTD shortbed, it's most often an auto trans, or 2wd, or both.

It could be me, but I don't think there are that many QC SB 4x4 6-speed trucks out there. All the other trucks similar to mine have been autos.

It also seems that the majority of 6-speeds are either LB duallys, or LB SRW trucks.

I konw that my truck *IS* somewhat special, though. It has the undercoated cab (built at the Lago plant just before closure). It has the XHD Mexican Block (no 53, 54, 55, 56 etc series).

And it was built in Mid-July of 02, making it one of the last off the line before they tooled up for making the 03s.

my buddy wanted the rare combo of a reg cab, dually, with the HO/6-spd, and i found one in the first week, just 60 miles away...but at the time my buddy couldnt buy the new truck.
it was sweet, low miles, a rare combo, and well taken care of...

(now my buddy drives a 2000 ford f-350...so sad)

Mine is like that, 2002 QC, SB, 6-speed, 4x4, coated underbody, Mexican "big boy" block, and a CAD on the front axle. I haven't seen many with all that.

Mine is a 2001 sb 4x4 6 spd and has the sport package. I was thinking it was kinda rare myself. I had to go to Laramie to get it.

I think the 6 speeds in general are sort of a rare option. Not so much on here, where there is a higher percentage of gearheads than in the general population, but most of the trucks you see are the automatics. I had to special order mine to get a black one with a 6 speed and rear defrost. Was pretty flexible on most everything else except the quad cab, 4x4, and the long bed. Just not alot of 'em around.

Mine is like that, but does NOT have the CAD, because it was such a late build..

What is special about the XDH block? Mine is SB but a 5sp. Bought it late 2002 and it does have undercoating. My front axle does not have the vacuum disconnect which is sort of bogus in my book.

Ive got a 01 6 speed/HO SB....nice combo with a 53 block...

I wouldnt necessarily say they are rare....but most guys that have the 6 speeds keep them, and thats what most people that actually use their truck are looking for.

Some friends of ours have an 02 QC SB 4x4 manual. Looks real good with the sled deck. Also sounds awesome, I can hear it coming 1/2 way down my street. Something like 700lbft torque with the stuff he's got done to it .

Can i kill you and tak your truck?

After you get the CaTCHER?

And I would say yours is pretty rare, I have only seen 1 2 gen witout the CAD, and it was an auto.

Here's the "conventional wisdom" from what I remember reading on TDR. This is not a quote, but rather my recollection of what it said:

The "Mexican" block is rumored to be a stronger cast with a higher nickel content. It's cast by Teksid. Something like 1 in 8 trucks have a Teksid, Mexican-made block.

If your 2nd gen has undercoating under the cab, it was made at the now-defunct Lago plant in Mexico. This plant ALSO happened to install the majority of the HD Teksid "Mexican" blocks.

The other block foundry was the "Tupy" foundry. The cast the majority of engine blocks. If you have a "5x" series on your block (53, 54, 55, etc), then you have a Tupy block cast in Brazil.

Supposedly, ALL the trucks made in St Louis have the Tupy block, as do the vast majority of the Saltillo trucks.

So, if you are fortunate enough to have an undercoated cab, then you have a Lago truck, which ALSO means it's more likely to have the HD Mexican engine block.

Tupy also casts the turbine elbows for the HX35s. Next time you have your turbo off, look for the "Tupy" letters on the side of the turbine elbow casting.

This seems especially odd to me because ALL B5.9s are assembled at CMEP in Columbus OH, no matter where they blocks were cast. How it ended up that Cummins sent the Mexican castings back to the Mexican assembly plants seems mysterious to me.

I would eschew the "conventional wisdom" and just say that if you have a Lago truck, you have undercoating. If you have no "5x" casting numbers on your block, it's the HD Teksid block.

I doubt that there's much of a correlation between block casting and assembly plants, because Cummins doesn't discriminate where the blocks come from, AFAIK. Why would they send blocks of certain origin only to certain assembly plants--- only to make a truck that will be sold in the US anyway?

Methinks that you could have a HD block in any 2nd gen, no matter which plant it was made at.
