General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

I'd like to see the 5 cylinder Volvo diesel here maybe in a XC70 station wagon.

But until they get the lower sulphur stuff and increase the cetane of the fuel, I think most of the Euro diesels will be limited.

I currently have a VW TDI with a 1.9 liter.

How are the harmonics on an odd numbered diesel engine?

Just curious is all, I would think that a 5 cylinder diesel would shake quite a bit.

VW diesels

I traded a VW Jetta TDI 2001 in on the truck the little woman made me promise that I would get a Passat Wagaon TDI when they are available again. The Jetta got honest 50 MPG at 75 MPH with air on. If you slowed down a little it would get 53 to 55 MPG. She was shocked that I would consider trading it for the truck. Pushed it by her by the above promise and that she could pull the boat to the lake with the truck while I drove the old motorhome.

In 2005 the Passat TDI should be out with the all new 2.0 TDI engine.

Love to see a Passat TDI station wagon sitting in my driveway. For my wife.
I can see it now, 17" wheels, Neuspeed springs, chipped......

According to the report I posted, it will have a 1.8 in the wagon and sedan.

I think they got their motors mixed up. The gas turbo is the 1.8 but the B6 Passat will be sporting a brand new generation of enginesbut the new TDI will be a 2.0 DOHC unit producing 134 hp/246 lb/ft.

VW released 2004 MSRP's for 2004 B5 Passat 2.0 TDI's but so far they're not released.

I too saw the JAG in Amsterdam and having spent some time recently in Asia and Europe I can tell you that almost every vehicle made in Europe and Asia is available with a Diesel, just not in the good old USA. In fact Isuzu Rodeo's made in Indiana are made with a diesel but they are all shipped out of the country. Other country's are way more open too diesel's because of fuel price's. In many parts of Asia and Europe Diesel is 30-50% cheaper than gas per liter. added to the better mileage they are big seller's. Most of them have good performance, but even those that don't sell good because of their economy. I wish we could buy even a fraction of them here. Even the gas engines sold there are different than what we get here. I work with a man from Scotland with a Volvo S-80 with a 5-cylinder gas and it's so smooth you can't hardly tell when it's running. He also has a trailer hitch on it that he uses to pull his caravan (camper) all over Europe with. When he's not pulling his trailer he gets about 35 miles per Imperial gallon. He tells me that most of the cars sold in the US would never sell over there because of the dismal fuel mileage. The thing is that the same manufacturers are producing these things. Another thing you see very few of over there is automatics because of reduced performance and economy. Just my .02, I'll put away my soapbox now.
