Smile Little Bt 4

Hi guys I may be planing a project to repower a 1997 landcruiser ... I was looking at a little cummins bt4 ...it has a GM trubo 400 trans allready mated to the engine .
It's a turbo that put's out a little over 100hp , right now the land cruiser has a 220hp straight 6 ... just about the same size as a cummins , I would like to do a 6b , but a newer 24valve is not out of the question .
I will have to change my original trans and transfer case ...
How powerful are those little 4cyl...?
Thanks
Greg

Sounds interesting. I love FJ 40's. I want one baddd!!!! Have you taken into account the massive weight of the engine, as far as the suspension and frame being able to handle it?

I saw one in a Jeep wrangler at the DHRA show in Indianpolis that had twin turbos. It looked like it would rip you face off but that being said I did not see it run. I think it would be really stout.

Trust me, I own an FJ-40 and everything in a Toyota 4x4 is overdesigned with a safety factor of at least 10! The newer models are no different. The FJ-80s have extremely stout frames and suspensions. I think a '97 is still SFA too right? I was just posting on the "little diesel that could" thread about how it would be awesome to put a 4BT into a Land Cruiser. The non USA Toyota diesels are cool, but just too hard to get ahold of. Go for it!

You can't get diesel land cruisers here?

My dad works at the potash mine , and that's what they have for transport underground , diesel landcruisers , 4 or 5 speed manuals.

Canada got diesel 'Cruisers for a number of years (BJ/HJ models) but I don't think Toyota exports any diesels to North America anymore. All Land Cruiser models sold in other parts of the world (South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia) are mostly diesels.

There's a slightly older Landcruser using a Cummins 4bt and GM turbo 400 transmission running around in the Park City, Utah area. I can't remember the exact details, but the guy found the radiator, intercooler and plumbing from other applications which looked as if they were factory made for the job. He claimed good power and very good mileage. Didn't look like a tough swap at all.

That 6b is WAY too heavy for a landcruiser swap.

Agreed, an engine that is nearly 1100 lbs has no place in a Land Cruiser. At almost 700 lbs, the 4BT is not much heavier than the heavy factory straight 6 and can be easily bombed to 250 hp/650 ft/lbs which would be plenty of torque to mangle the Toyota driveline.

For that price for a 24v, I'd scrap the landcruiser idea for now...

Smile Re : BT 4

Hi Guys
I did think they weighted that much ...Wow ...I did see a company thats installing 6b in landcruisers ... I went and looked at that 24 valve ... the truck was hit pretty good , but my consern was the guy had zero mechanical abilty and first told me he had it started last month ... then he told me it was just cranking over .
I looked at the inspection stick ... the truck has been sitting for 5yrs ... Yes ... He never coated the cyl ... just sat , I'm figuring last month he tried to get it started ... Who knows how bad the walls were rusted ... may have cracked a ring or 2 ... I told him that was the worst thing he could have done to try and dry start that ...he had know Idea what I was talking about .
So he said he would like to get 4000 grand ...I laughed ...he said thats what people told him to ask...LOL
The story was he droped his insurance , crashed the truch and still had a lone on it ...so it has no title and some company is looking for it 2000 miles from here ....I can't beleave he would haul this that far , he was like Joe Dirt pulling his metor around ...LOL
So I told him $1000.00
I really only wanted it for the parts and thats all it's really worth.
So I will still keep my eyes out for a BT 4 , unless you guys have any other sugestions ...I was planing a trany and transfer swap also .
Thanks guys
Greg
