Could it be then that the John Deere oil is the same as the old highly acclaimed Chevron Delo400 API-CI-4 ??

It is very close, it is blended by Chevron but with a JD spec additive package.

I have heard a rumor that JD oil is getting ready to change over to CJ-4.

Last I heard JD said they will not stop making there CI-4 oil for many years as there are a lot of engines that still require that oil.

I hope you are right, as I plan on acquiring some for my next oil change. Still have to find a JD dealer nearby who stocks this stuff. I am not exactly in an agricultural area. Heck, i'm not even in a cultural area!

I heard the same thing about JD keeping the CI-4 around for a while. Makes sense though, there are many more 40+ year old tractors still being used than trucks.

I just switched over my 07 5.9 to the JD 15/40 +50 oil. Says on the bottle that it meets the Cummins requirements etc. I noticed it is a 'Darker" oil from the bottle.

I got some info back today, the newer blend will not be CJ-4 but will be uprated to CI-4+.

I thought Illinois was big corn country.

Any John Deere tractor dealership should have it; when I go through Illinois, I see them all over.

Just make sure you get the PLUS 50 and make sure it is API-CI-4 and don't say CJ-4 anywhere on it.

Just got back from a Hogan Walker John Deere place in Morris, Il. which is probably the closest to you. On Rt47 north of 80. Picked up ten gallons in 2.5 gallon containers for $138 and some change out the door. Could've saved a few more dollars ($4 to be exact) by getting it in the 5 gallon jugs but it's too much of a hassle to pour from those buckets.
Should be good for quite awhile...
