Okay... Lets say that the dealership puts it on their lot for $14500 (which is not what you figure deprecation from). That is still over a 50% drop in value in less than a year. Unacceptable in my opinion.

Jeep resale
That's odd. I bought new for $16,000 my Jeep Sport, inline six. I traded it two years later with 60k miles on it for $12,500! The dealer sold it for $13,000 the next afternoon. He flipped it for $500 to an employee! The book at the time, listed my vehicle for $12,000.
I have yet to see one advertisement for the CRD's, which leads me to believe that they really don't want to sell them. Oth, I've heard and seen plenty of ads for the new Mercedes E320 CDI diesels. http://www.mbusa.com/campaigns/e320cdi/index.jsp Same goes for the VW diesels. But nothing from Jeep. I asked my dealer when he expects to see one. He pointed to a auto publication. But, he's got several Sprinters, which get better mileage---just ugly as heck!

Hmmm.... that's funny. I bought my Jeep for $25,500. After putting 10,000 miles on it this year I just had a dealer offer me $24,900 trade in because mine is a diesel. I don't know where you guys live but Jeeps sure don't depreciate much at all around here.

Don't know. Just telling my story. We went to numerous dealerships all with the same story. Checked Edmunds and NADA and all said the same thing. Jeep Liberty had the worst resale value of any domestic car except for the Neon at the time.
Now I’m not saying your wrong but why would a dealer offer $24900 for a trade when you could buy a brand new one for $600 more? What would be his incentive? He would have to sell the one that you trade in for less than what he gave you for trade. Doesn’t make much financial sense. Not when I could come on the lot and choose to buy a new one for $600 more.
Just curious?

They don't need to advertise the CRD. They originally were only going to make 5000 and ended up making 8300 due to the demand. The local jeep dealer couldn't keep them on his lot and was buying them from other dealers and having them shipped in. The resale on the CRD is excellent. I've been looking at some for sale in Texas that have around 10,000 miles on them and they are selling within 2000.00 of what they brought new. We drove 2 new ones and liked them both. We just decided to wait on buying another new vehicle for awhile. I hope they start putting a diesel in the Jeep Commander as I would buy it before the Liberty due to the 7 passenger seating and 7000 pound towing capacity. Most of the folks I know with CRDs in this area are also getting between 27 and 30 mpg on the highway. The braking system is also much better on the CRDs than the initial release of the Liberty gassers.
I'm not sure what their thinking was, but I saw it on paper. They had "$24,995" in the trade-in value column. I was looking at a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. I decided to keep my CRD for the mileage and because it's a better all-around vehicle...but yeah the resale on these things in amazing. It's just like the Dodge trucks. Gassers are selling for pennies, but if it's got a Cummins diesel in it they are still selling for $20K+ even with thousands of miles on them.
Firefighter, I am sorry to hear of your experience. I can't explain what happened to you. I wish you would have contacted me at the time because I certainly would have given well more than 10k for a loaded 15000 mile liberty.
I have sold all the CRD's I can get my hands on. I am currently sold out of them but have 3 more ordered. When I got one for my wife, I think it cost us about $22500, that was about my dealer cost with the holdback off too. It listed for about $26000, they have deeper discounts on them now and I could replace it at my cost for around $21k. I just had a wholesaler from Canada offer me $20,500 for hers with 14k miles on it, I thought that was pretty good?

Bought one three weeks ago for the wife and we ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. It’s getting 20 MPG in the city and yes that is better than the gasoline version!
Diesels do not start getting true mileage until AT LEAST 5,000 miles (sometimes more). After that, it only gets better. We have 1,250 miles and have seen it slowly but steadily go up with every tank cycle. From perusing forums around the net, the general consensus is that once broken in, City MPGs should easily be 25 or better.
Also, for what it’s worth, trade in value a dealer tries to give you is NOT a true indication of worth. At the trade-in point of the process it’s a free for all with the dealer trying to make the best deal he can for himself…not for you.
There are two tiers of vehicular value…resale & wholesale (better known as trade in). Wholesale will be less than retail value. If you don’t do your research (Kelly Blue Book, NADA, etc.) unethical dealers will try to low ball you every time.
At times, buying a new vehicle is something akin to the old shell game. They’ll come down a lot off of sticker only to make it up with the trade-in by going below wholesale listings. If you don’t know what KBB or NADA values your vehicle at, the deal you make will more than likely not be one you’ll be happy with later. Let the buyer beware!!

I've got 11,500 miles on mine now. Bought it in May. My mileage now is identical to my mileage when I bought it. "Breaking it in" hasn't changed a thing on this engine. The only thing that I can tell a noticeable difference in is driving habit. If I keep the tach below 2,000 RPM (below 65 mph) on the Interstate, I can get 26 mpg. If I go over 2,000 RPM (65 and higher) on the highway, then my mileage starts dropping off fast. These diesels could actually use a 6th gear.

In my opinion you get screwed all the time whenever you trade things in. They never want to give you crap for what you have because they want to make as much money as possible on you. They offer all of these incentives to get you to buy new, when all it is is a shuffle around of the numbers to make it look like you are getting a good deal...............it's business.............you never get good deals unless you know somebody that knows somebody that knows somebody!!! Resale on every car sucks, anything that depreciates over 10% the second you drive off the lot is freakin RETARDED.........might as well take $5,000 and soak it in some gas and light it up!!!
I bought a brand new 03 powerstroke that listed for $45,000, but seeings how my wife worked for a Ford dealership I was able to buy it for $32,000 with a couple grand down.................now a year later I go to trade it in and they offer me $30,000 with only 19,000 miles on it and a TON of goodies on it!!! $45,000 to $30,000 in a year...............WHAT THE Edit???? I was able to get $32,000 out of it and walk away with a little cash but I should have had SO MUCH MORE!!!
Jeeps do suck for resale, except for the wranglers, they seem to hold on a little better than say the Cherokee or Grand Cherokee. People spending almost $40,000 g's on a new grand cherokee and having it worth around $20,000 a year later.............hmmmm that's COOL!!!
It is far better to sell your stuff out right and try to get as much as possible than to trade it off, you will always get screwed no matter what you have. My mom has a new Escalade that she paid $50 some odd thousand for it, went to trade it off and the wanted to give her $32,000 ON A CADDY!!!
Britt, I feel your pain man, I've been screwed over one to many times by dealerships and it gets OLD QUICK!!! You made a smart move going to Honda, great cars!!!

rE: HONDA ACCORD ??
Come On Now, I Don't Mind Honda's But That Accord Issue Is Being Beatin' To Death. I'm Sure Your Honda Will Tow 5k Lbs. And Tear Thru The Snow And Mud, Right ??? Why Even Bring Up The Honda Thing In A Diesel Forum ??? Why Not Trade Your Jeep In For An Ira Or Some Stocks, Much Better Than A Honda, And Since When Are Cars An Investment, I Drive My Cars 'till The Wheels Fall Off. Hint: The Hondas Wheels Fell Off On The First Jump ! Besides Accords Are For Seniors ....

Unlike you, I don’t keep my vehicles until the wheels fall off. I buy what I want when I want. If I get the urge to go out and buy another car that is what I will do. I realize that cars are not an investment and I have never bought one for that purpose. I buy a vehicle because I like it. If I get tired of it after a while I will buy something else. As a consumer that is my right. But as a consumer I expect a certain amount of value for my dollar. The Jeep was not it. The Honda is.
Why bring up the Honda in a diesel forum???? Because I can that’s why. We started talking about depreciation and I mentioned our Accord. If it takes you this little to get worked up then I suggest you just skip all of my post because you are definitely not going to like me.
Oh yeah…. I didn’t buy my Accord to tow with or "tear thru the snow and mud". I bought it as a safe vehicle for my wife and child.

Enjoy the site.
Britt

P.S. You don't have to capitalize every word.... the first word of the sentence will do just fine.
