Most of the non-diesel public already thinks of diesels as smokey and stinky, why make it worse?

In another recent thread I asked what was so cool about smoking. Most of the people who responded were really angry about being asked such a question.

I agree that diesels are already considered smoky and stinky by the general public even though they only notice the one in a hundred that are. And that we need more of them, not less. I like having a powerful and fast truck too, but making a big smoky display about it is not a good trick on the highway because it does more harm than good. If for no other reason, I can't see buying oil from those that hate us simply to turn it into smoke just to look cool.

I think most people think of a city buses when they talk about the smoke from a deisel engine. I have yet to see a big city bus that did not belch out a cloud of black smoke when it takes off.

That should all change, shortly, now that Global Warming is getting favorable recognition and acceptance via national and international press.

Won't be long before smokey's radar\laser guns are converted to read opacity, as well as velocity.

Having read posts here along the lines of "I smoked out a couple of schoolgirls walking to class today. It was so cool. Ha ha!", I really don't mind more stringent limits and increased monitoring and enforcement of emmision control regulations. My truck is required to undergo biannual emmisions tests and passes at less than half the allowable threshhold. It's worth $20 every other year to know that my vehicles are operating correctly not creating unnecessary pollution.

Ok, but you also have no fueling mods so I would expect it to pass.

Yes, and knowing that I have to pass in conjunction with a personal desire to be at least somewhat of a responsible steward of the environment, I will keep any mods conservative. Maybe a #11 plate, a 3G GSK, and a 4" exhaust w/muffler. I don't need to be #1 on the dyno or fog out the whole highway just to be the first to the top of the mountain pass.

I'm sure this statement is going to be VERY unpopular with some, but a lot people could probably do without extreme fuel mods. The vast majority of us do not need a 500rwhp truck to drive to work or school and back. And those that truly do, should be thinking about stepping up to at least a medium duty truck anyhow.

I enjoy taking my truck to the dragstrip, so of course I want to mod my truck. No I don't plan on being the fastest, but does that mean I shouldn't be able to build a more powerful truck because it's also my daily driver, no. One's driving style is more to blame then modifications.

I agree with the most the people that really really need these trucks actually really need a bigger truck, but there are a few things that make that diffucult first price second 4 wheel drive and for me it is hard to get those big truck into tight places.

Harris and adjoining counties constitute an EPA non-attainment area. There are already opacity check rigs that set up on freeway on-ramps here.
