How important is it to plug in?

I am gonna be gettin a CTD and the place I am going to be working has no close outlets for plugging in during the day. It can get cold here in PA and after sitting for a 9 hour work day, how bad is it gonna sound to start the beast up? How long should I let it idle?

as long as your batteries are in good shape, it'll be fine... don't idle it long... 45sec or so, and then start driving it lightly... it'll warm up quicker if you start driving it, and it's better for the engine than letting it idle.

That is good to know! Thanks! I just read a thread on here tho about people using sticks to keep their RPMs up and they did this for like 10 mins. What is with that?

keeps the revs up which helps teh grid heaters cycle when it is cycling through them.

i usually let mine come up proper oil pressure and then drive easy till teh water temps starts to move.

ill hold idle at 1100 for 1-2min. then go. jiMMy

usually plug it in if its below 40 over ngiht.

Holding engine speed over 1200 rpm also helps the fuel make a more complete burn. If left idling at idle speed over a long period of time, the unburnt fuel leaves deposits on the valves etc.

we just had a week of -24 C here and -38 C with the wind chill factor...i forgot to plug it in overnight and had to go to school for 8 am.....holy crap...id cranked slow about 6 times and fired...i pinned my foot in her to keep it from dying and held it there for about 10 sec till the rpms would actually respond to my foot...it smoked like u wouldnt believe!!...the poor lil guy cycled for about 10 min everything clattered...my cup holders were shatterign to pieces! but it did start......so it will start if ur batteries and starter contacts are in top shape..but i'll never do that again

If idling for a while is bad for the CTD, why is every big rig parked at the roadside travel plaza left idling?

so you're wondering why the big trucks keep idling do ya?? k here goes....alot of times those sucker wont start again u cant exactly get a boost off a honda so they dont wanna risk it .....then they keep her idling because they're heating up the interior for a nap or to use appliances (some have kitchens now)..

last but not least ...ever hear of diesel clatter addiction?? alot of us have it and you know it!! if you had a custom pete with 8 inch staright piped stacks you wouldnt let it clatter at every mcdonalds?? yeah you would.....dont argue!!!! yes you would

Most have lube-refiners that filter out the unburnt fuel as the engine will not stay hot enough and unburnt fuel goes into the oil. As also stated above they need them running for heat/ac and restart issues does prevail. Goodluck,,,Rick
