Fire Ring ?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but...

What the heck is a "fire ring"?
What does it do, and what is its purpose?

A guy In the neighborhood was telling me that if I was to turn the fuel up some, I would need to get a fire ring. Is this true?

Thanks!

I know it takes a lot more than just a little extra fuel to need firerings, mainly a ton of boost. That being said I know that they are similar to O-rings but do not know the real differences. I know that there are several guys on here who have each and they will give some specifics.

a fire ring is the metal ring that goes around each cylinder on a head gasket and hold in the compression (in laymans terms) when you oring a cylinder head you leave a small wire protruding slightly from a machined grove and it bites down harder on the factory fire ring.

When you fire ring a head, they cut out the fire ring in the factory gasket and a much larger ring (than a oring) sits in its place as well as a grove machined in the head or block or both. The gasket comes with the fire rings and you can get diffrent sizes and depths along with machining specs.

So, are firerings better than orings or just another option to get the same result? I know that it is said to run over 50psi you sould have orings. If the firerings are better then at what psi range do you need to upgrade? I will probally never need either on my truck, I'm just wondering.

Thanks,
