Downsides of the Powerstroke?
The HEUI system is my biggest complaint over the engine, CAT's 3126 and C7 ACERT are the same. It was a good design about 20 years ago. This system pulls oil straight from the crankcase and pressurizes in excess of 3000psi at times. Humidity, altitude, viscosity of the oil, and quality of the oil all play a key role in its operation. Now, take into account how many ranchers and farmers own PSD. Do you think they are as good about pulling maintinance as the rest of us? I know the majority around here arent. I feel a common rail system should be introduced.
Glow plugs, ancient design and troublesome.
Last but not least, the V design engine. Same old story so I wont get into that. If you want a high revving shorter life to overhaul engine, get a gasser.

All you have to do is help one of your buddies change a water pump on a 7.3 and even worse a 6.0 and you'll never want one based on that alone. For a long list of other reasons, go check out TheDieselStop.com. None are perfect. Mine has a vibration that's soon to be addressed by DC. That's it in 41,000+ miles. The SD with PSD has a long list of problems, re-flash after re-flash, minor repairs are nightmares due to the shoe horned fit if the PSD and filters are more expensive. Call the dealership and ask the price of an air filter.
"I think that they also have an independent front end
we have strait axel its the way to go . "built like a truck""
Nope...F-250/350 4x4 is a solid axle. The F-150 is independent...I think.
If I woulda done some hardcore research I woulda bought a 12V Cummins. Simple design w/ amazing torque potential w/ some minor mods. The Cummins that's in the Dodges was built to produce 500 HP/1000 ft-lbs. If you de-tune it to 230 HP/450 ft-lbs and put it in a light duty truck you get an engine that'll never die.
Another thing to consider...open the hood of a PSD and the hood of a Cummins. Say you wanna mess around w/ the turbo. Which engine would you wanna touch? I'll take the engine w/ all the space on either side of it!

Looked @ my buddys f350 and it didnt look like a strait axel to me
must of been all the stuff they had wraped around the pumpkins and under carige or something.
only seen 1500 chevys not sure about the duramax I'll bet its independent it seems the newer chevys are more out for ride then durabillity.

The cost of just the powerstroke.
If you run for instance a 24 valve cummins put a box on it and some 275 injectors and straight pipe it, it will run great with a limited budget. Dont forget to get gauges. My father has two powerstrokes he uses in his company, and he replaced the injectors in one of them, and set him back 1600.00 dollars. Only five were acting up but he replaced all of them. Some 275 injectors for the cummins, all six will run you about 325.00 if you shop around. Like the other post stated above pop the hood and see which one you would want to work on. Just my 2 cents.

Friend of mine has a 97 F350. Has had a bunch of electronic problems (mainly sensors). Not a bad truck otherwise.
The one thing that made me really envious was for $6 he converted the EBPV into an exhaust brake. A switch some wire and a couple of diodes.

All chevys have the IFS front end.
Don't all dodges are 2001 have the IFS?

136,000 Moded mile and runs awesome. If you want to build tons of power the Cummins is the way to go. The early 7.3 with out Powder rods can be moded, but takes lots of cash and is still not as reliable as the cummins after you pass the 500hp mark. 6.0's I just wont even go there!

Go take a look at the www.dieselstop.com
Do a search for "Texas Towncar"
Old Texas had been trying to cure, or figure out, one of the major problems with the 7.3. And it was major, it is the infamous "Cackle". A cackle is a problem resulting from unspent fuel collection in the cylinders that caused some very serious engine damage. Head, piston, rod and block type damage. Tex was making progress, then the 6.0 was released. A new set of problems (6.0), and Ford, as usual, left everyone hanging.
I don't know if those posts are archived, or even if Texas Towncar is still around. It did make for some very interesting reading. There was allot of in-fighting regarding the subject as usual. Ford people are a very ****, verging on psychotic, group. They don't like to hear "Houston, we have a problem", even though old Texas spent many unpaid hours on the "Cackle" issue, to the point of Ford sending out engineers from Dearborn to look at his work.

A guy who works for me has a 03 f350 w/6.0 and has had many problems big and small within 40K miles.
My first diesel was the 94 PSD with the stick.... i loved that truck, it looked great and sounded awesome...BUT it also nickle and dimed me to death. I had all the minor problems listed in my #1 to 6 list ... but still i liked the truck so much i was willing to keep it up.....however the last straw was us hauling a 8'9" camper ... only bout an hour away from home (straight stretch of freeway) and the tranny heated up so bad that the rubber floor mats began to smolder! The tranny hump was so hot you couldn't keep your hand on it! Yikes!
" Ooooohh, said the Mechanic..... thats "normal" for these trucks"!

I still have my 95 PSD 4dr 350 its been a great truck 160,000 on it now, will hand it down to my son. I had the 1983 6.9 and was very pleased with this truck also ,it was running as stong as new when I sold it with 167,000. Ford scarred me with the new unproven 6 ltr PS and all the problems. So decided to give Dodge a shot all I can do is hope I am as satisfied.
when I shopping around for my new truck I really was considering the new 05 superduty's. It wasnt the 6.0 reliability that changed my mind, it was the price and the attitude of all 5 dealerships I went to.......none would even admit any 6.0's had problems nor would they even take me seriously (only 21)
made sure I stopped by the dealership that was the rudest to me with my new 600
