diesel tech schools
If UTI is anything like Lincoln Tech (where I go) its all about the student. You have to be proactive to get the best education. The teachers are all former Techs so dont really feel like force feading you the info. I go after every bit of information I can get my hands on like a bull dog (mainly because I just really love working on cars) and I could walk out of school right now and get a job at a dealership for over 15 an hour.
UTI or Lincoln tech will do one thing for you if you go for the education not the deploma (like someone said earlier) it will move you up the ladder faster! But it wont put you at the top of the ladder the first day of graduation.
Make sure you take your ASEs while you are still in school. And remember if you are looking into the extended education (BMW STEP program, VW program, and I believe International has one too) you have to have almost perfect atendance and a 4.0 grades. Those programs are a VERY good thing. Getting out of the BMW STEP the average pay rate for the last class was $18.90. Top three got over 20 bucks an hour starting.

i got pretty lucky coming out of school and getting a job with the railway. as a mechanic there, i work on the diesels, plus the other stuff there too on the locomotives. i started out as an apprentice there fresh out of school making $17.xx [cdn funds] and the pay went up every 6 months as you made it through their apprentice. now 3.5 years later, i am a fully licenced heavy equipment mechanic [red seal canada]. not the cleanest working enviroment around, but it pays pretty well when you work overtime [i take home about $1k cdn ($±850 usd) a week with overtime]
still have a job, not giving up on school
yhanks for everyones input, i still have a job !! yay i guess christmas wont be to bad.. but i havnt givin up on school. but the closet diesel tech school is in sacremento ca. or tucson ariz both about 350 miles from me.. i talke to a few recruiter from uti and nit , they said i could do most of the ase cert local here .. then spend the the left over in sacremento or tucson.. or wait till 2007 when a class will be made availible locally.. i guess ill keep looking into it..
