The diesel crisis - surged to $200 per barrel

Are we ready to spend even bigger bucks for diesel?

Wholesale diesel prices in the spot market of New York harbor, a key pricing point, have surged this week to more than $200 per barrel. Excluding a three-week period from late April into mid-May, that would be a record high. As a result, American refiners are enjoying the best-ever diesel margins, with the profit of turning a barrel of crude into one of diesel hitting a record high of $86.5 per barrel, up roughly 450% from the 2000-2020 average of $15.7 per barrel.

I finished installing my new 50 gallon auxiliary tank last week, and was going to sweat it out before filling it just in case pump prices dropped a little...From what I read though, I guess I'll bite the bullet and fill it up at $4.49 tomorrow...It's just a crapshoot......Ben

Read in the news yesterday the the US only as 25 days of diesel left. This is very serious if true. Is it true? Can anybody explain this to me? Does it mean that diesel consumption exceeds the supply? Does it mean that your government policies have shut down diesel refining? Many more questions. I know what will happen to the country very quickly if there really is no diesel. What about jet fuel for planes? Isn't this a type of diesel?

Doesn't specifically define it in the article, but I would assume it means that if all imports and refining stopped, we would have enough on hand for 25 days. Demand is outpacing supply, which is driving the inventory surplus down. If they can't boost supply, it will continue to eat into the surplus.

Now Saudi can just keep lowering production to match SPR release. This is a national emergency and it could have all been avoided! Thanks Brandon!

My gamble paid off - sort of...I filled up the new tank yesterday, then went and voted...On my way home, I noticed the same station had jumped its price by a dime a gallon...If I had waited it would have cost me an extra five bucks...The old truck also rides better with that extra 400 pounds on the deck......Ben

I look at GasBuddy every day...Currently Costco (where I am not a member) and Murphy USA (anybody's money is welcome) is $4.33...Yesterday a station in New Caney was said to be selling diesel at $3.71......Ben

Anyone considering purchasing a 500 gallon above ground tank, and buying what you need to last you a while?

Figure it will cost $3000 to fill it. Not sure what a tank dropped off at the house would cost.

At least I could still work while there was still work to do. Wife says if diesel supply craps out, there WILL BE NO MORE WORK to do.

I hate it when she thinks she's right.

Paid 6.29 to top off the tank yesterday. Strange that gas is only $4.
Expect prices to go up on about everything that takes a truck ride before you buy it.

In my area, in Maryland, $5.99 per gallon. It's increased about $1.25 per gallon within the last 3-4 weeks. This is totally inexcusable. With our resources already available, our fuel prices should be the lowest in the world. I am not a trucker, but I do feel for the independent truck drivers who really have a daily battle to hope to make a small profit and survive in todays climate.

$6.49 up from 6.25 at the same station, about the same time yesterday.
