Cummins V. Powerstroke V. Duramax
"Engine is great but the body has been rattled to death.""does,nt that happen in the first 50k
i wonder how many years any of the three motors make in stock configuration, then try modded config. how many 500hp cummins you see out there on the roads, how many fords and maxes, bet you there is more duramaxes than the other two combined as dailydrivers

You see a few d-max's out there with a juice/attitude(about 360hp) or something, and only very few with 500hp or more. I can think of many more CTD's out there that are modded running around than D-Max's, and most d-max's dont even have 70k on them yet. My dads cousin has a d-max; his son has a new CTD. He is die hard chevy(drove 6.5's), and he admitted that he thought the d-max would be good for only around 350k miles, where he figured the cummins was a better pulling engine, and would last more like 500k miles. The D-Max has proven to be a decent engine so far, but it will NEVER be able to handle what the cummins has. Its a V-8 that is not made to take the abuse the cummins can. Have you seen one with 700k miles on it? Or even a measly 400k yet? I have one question. What motor do you honestly think is best, the CTD or the D-Max? I havent gotten an answer from a d-max guy on that question yet. Must be scared to speak truthfully.

MikeyB
Agree with MikeyB. Generally, the Dodge/Cummins are usually the working trucks, Ford/PS are the daily drivers, and Chevy/Duramax just want to be driving a diesel. Take a look at what you see on the road the most. Hotshoters are nearly always Dodge/Cummins or Ford/PS (usually the 7.3.) From what i have read, Ford is a popular choice with hotshoting because of the larger available cabs.

My goal with this truck is to drive it till the wheels fall off. Once they do, pull the engine and put it in a newer body and keep going. I am only up to 200K right now, so I have a few more miles to go.
The other thing to remember is that when people talk PowerStrokes....they don't differentiate which PowerStroke.
My 99 F-250 said "medium duty diesel" on its valve cover. The 7.3 is a solid diesel much like the cummins..........proven, solid, hard working engines.
HOWEVER...........
The 6.0L should never had been given the "PowerStroke" designation. It should have been named "PowerBroke"....because it is a light duty engine. Heck, it can't even keep its head gaskets from leaking compression forcing coolant out the coolant bottle stock, much less modded.
Talking to some people who have been around diesels.....they compare it to the 6.2-6.5 GM diesels.....any lighter duty, and they would be a gas engines
So if someone is talking "PowerStrokes" with you.....find out which one they are talking about....because they are not the same in any means.

Fredw's been having a leak of the NOS into his cab lately,
He lives in a town with an overabundance of GM dealers. GM has been selling like hotcakes, but comparing the the FoMoCo would be rediculous, as well as the diesels out there of the Dodge market..What diesel were you driving in 96 Fred?? My 89 CTD had 400,000 Km on it without much of a problem.. Not like my buddies 89 Gm that had holes where the door handles used to be.

Biz partners 02 DM has more rattles than I've got..
A few more years and GM will have the numbers out there, no question.

No they won't, GM will be out of business!!!
The DMAX 6.6 engine in the 2500/3500 are marketed as 200000 mile service life according to GM web. The 4500/5500 DMAX is MD specked and built. You can order them with a exhaust brake . GM does not recommend EB on the light duty built 2500/3500 6.6 truck engines. The same with the PSD 7.3/6.0 engines.........JIM
Comparing the drive of a 4x4 quad cabs. Dodge drives better. I grew up in Chevy's and Fords. But, between my son and I, we've had all of them in the last 3 years and the Dodge I'm driving now feels like a big Mustang. Corners flat, turns quick, and drives down the highway like a car. Sold an '03 PS 4x4 Quadcab, hated to drive it on 2 lane country roads above 50 mph. It was just scarey.
My work truck is a 97 F250 PS. I have had no problems with it other then the water pump. Now I have to replace the glow plugs it has 200,000+ on it. I like the 5.9 way better though. I compare the 5.9 to a VW bug way easy to work on and bomb. I think both the 7.3 and 5.9 motors are very well built. As for the Duramax and the Ford 6.0 I can't say the same.
Weve got 1.2 million on a 93 model Dodge CTD and 1.4 million PLUS on a 95CTD (odometer was broke for 2-3 years)
Trucks are used for service work and absolutely NOTHING has been touched in the drivetrain. They dont have much power but they still run 80mph on the interstate and get close to 20mpg...

Odd how location determines the brand of truck...I live in Va. and the ratio is approximately: 70 percent Ford, 28 percent Dodge and about 2 percent Chevy. Those also seem to be the approximate numbers on gas truck as well. I just visited my son in Jackson Mi. and was pleasently surprized to find; 80 percent Dodge, 15 percent Ford and 5 percent Chevy...
