Chrysler losing Ram trucks....to Cummins???
Wonder if that's Case-IH's (Fiat-owned as well) philisophy these days?
A model tractor can sit on the shelf 24/7/365 and do its intended purpose at 100% capacity, while real tractors have to stop for fuel, maintenance, ect., not to mention the needs of the operator.
Sounds like the only tractor that actually has a purpose according to this quote is a toy model.

I'm an Ag Equipment Salesman and have seen many high hoursed tractors without overhaul.
I recently took a 4430 on trade that had 16,000+ on it and never apart.
My cousin had a 2130 that had over 22,000 but had been overhauled once.

My grandfather has a 666 that had 13xxx on it when the tach quit, no idea how many are on it now. It was however recently overhauled, but still. My dads 1256 has 25000 on it and has had a major once and bearings twice. I only wish you could buy stuff that lasts like these old tractors do nowadays.

Dodge and Jeep are going no where. They are 2 of Chyslers best selling lines and it would e a very bad idea to get ride of them. I think they need to stop the almost double production of vehicals. like the durango and the Aspen. The same freakin lay out only one has more chrome and big rims. They need to eliminate models that do not sell well and keep the ones that are sellers.

Bring back some cheap, plain jane, commuters, along with options. Not option packages. I want a Cummins, but I want a manual trans, with rubber floor covers and a vinyl seat. cruise tilt and power options are not needed. I want a work truck not a Caddy! They would sell a ton of trucks and would take over as the "work truck" of choice.

I agree. If Dodge could package the cummins into a true "work truck" at a more affordable price they could steal alot of the market that Ford and GM dominate.
When I was truck shopping last all I wanted was a plain old work truck with a manual and a diesel.
Dodge had to search the entire US just to find one 700 miles away that still had power windows and carpet- 2 things I specified not wanting. Then they wanted to charge extra to have it delivered.
3 blocks down there was a GMC dealer with 4 trucks on the lot exactly like what I was looking for. Sold.

bigger issues out there. get the governemnt to make airbags, ABS ect all optional not mandated. one of the best parts about the old Ford's 92-97 was each system was stand alone. cruise control was a module on the fender with a signal from the speedo. ABS was a module with signal from the speedo. Air bag could be disconnected. Same thing with power windows, AC ect. what all this ment was it was the truck could be dumbed down. taken from base model to fully loaded with out effecting all other systems, today everything is intertwined..... Ever had an airbag go off because of your snow plow
make a truck that has longevity and servicablity in mind.
make the 1/2 ton 3/4 ton and 1 ton share platforms again. put a 9/14 in the front and rear of a 1/2 ton. share suspension parts & dimensions ect
offer like they did in the 70's full time 4x4 with the for life unit bearing or a spindle and hub upgrade. the mileage gains would help.
Greasable u-joints, tie-rods and ball joints
offer a low hp penny pincher mileage getting diesel and a larger higher hp diesel.
Offer a base model with a stick in the half tons thru 1 tons
use the same tranny for gas and diesel manual rigs.
keep the interior simple and versatile. just because i want AC or power windows doesnt mean i want a different interior package and an automatic.
Make the transmissions stand alone units. Offer the Std duty transmission and a HD version for all models. In house (cheap) or industril (Aisin) if they'd offer it people would pay for the upgrade
offer a truck with no warranty or limited warranty? spend less time trying to protect the computer and more time focused on the quality of the product
The work truck has been forgotten, GM is the closest thing but now their philosophy is choice A or B Gas or diesel Auto or Auto. it'll last you 150-200k miles and then throw it away. problem is you can't choose anything in that truck it comes 1 way. their way. Ford still offers some decent work trucks but you couldnt give us anything with a 6.ohmygod 0 or 4 into our fleet and the steering is crap but the trucks are more servicable. But as of this year i can get a base model V10 with a 6 spd but i cant get AC or any other option. Automatics for us never last the guys much parking paws all too often. And Dodge still hasen't figured out that sharing the WT model from 1/2 -1 ton would help especially some of us who have fleets parts interchangiblity through multiple years is fairly important to fleets trying to keep inventories to a minimum
