centane booster

I was just curious if anyone has had any experience with this type of product. If so, would you recomend it or advise against its use? Does it boost performance at all? etc....

I've used the Power Service cetane booster and have never noticed any performance difference. Did get 1-2 mpgs better mileage with it though.
Could be worth it now that the fuel prices are high.

Infidel, that is the same brand that I saw at walmart, do you run the regular booster or the one that has an additive/conditioner and booster combined.

If you want a big cetane boost, try 20+ Cetane by Synergyn. A little bit goes a long way. They have it at O'Rielly Auto Parts down here.

Ha, just realized I threw an extra n in cetane. I was just curious as to what benefits or down sides this type of product has on the fuel system and what not. The bottle of power service was under $4 and treated up to 100 gallons, which would last me close to 5 weeks. If there are no ill effects that you guys know of I might try it for kicks.

Power service diesel kleen... silver bottle at wal-mart. Good stuff. I can't imagine that there'd be any adverse effects on the fuel system... especially since it adds lubricity to the fuel (adds lubrication to the injection pump and injectors).

I have a boat with a 200 HP Volvo turbodiesel which is almost identical to the Cummins diesel. Due to possible water in the fuel as well as algae, I have always used an additive to keep the water in dispersion, prevent algae growth and to boost the cetane rating. The boat is 9 years old and has never missed a beat. Of course, a truck will not have fuel in the tank for a year nor have algae growth but you may pick up some dirty or watery fuel. I generally use the stuff from Walmart.

In addition, it'll probably help keep your lube oil cleaner, longer. ^fuel cetane=improved combustion=less soot to get in the oil.

Last year after elk camp my mpg dropped off at least 3mpg for about 3-4 tanks. At first I just figured it was a bad tank of fuel. I only had about 20k on the truck and was a little worried so I tried the power service and w/in 1 tank my mpg was right back where I started. About a year later and I am up to 21-22 mpg. I dont know if it was the power service or just more miles on the truck but that is up from 18-19mpg.

Yes, silver bottle from Wal-Mart for around $3, treats three tanks.
Some folks have reported fuel sender failures that they think were attributed to different additives, senders were fine after the additive use was discontinued.
Personally I've never had a problem.

If you're running the 2nd gen VP44 injector pump, the real advantage to these products, and the reason why you should use a little in every tankfull, is the lubricity they add to the fuel.

Cetane Improver is one on several additives in Diesel Conditioners. Over the last 15 yrs the quality of diesel has gone down in order to make more of it. Cetane #'s have dropped nationally from 55 to 42 on average over 20 yrs. If cetane gets below 40 - the average diesel will not start.

As stated, cetane improvers aid combustion; it is normally mixed with a lubricity agent and a water demulsifier and sold as total conditioner for pumps, injectors and upper cylinders. Using a good treatment will increase mileage enough to pay for itself in many cases. They help more fuel get burned; thus, less smoke and more power with NO negative side effects.

Most also include an anti-gel additive for winter time.

Buying in quantity (5g Pails) can get cost down to 1.5 cents a gallon to treat your diesel. Use of these products is highly recommended, IMHO.

I've used whole bottles of Power Service's Diesel Kleen with a tank of winter fuel blend, and have noticed a significant improvement in mileage, but I've since gone to Stanadyne PF, and that's where I'm staying.
