aluminum heads
Does anyone know when Cummins started using aluminum heads? I noticed the 03's have them but haven't been able to check out earlier years. Thanks.

I'd think you must've gotten the only one. :P I'd bet that the '03 models must be IT! Tony

Re:aluminum heads
As far as I know, Cummins has never used aluminium heads. Any of you guys hear of that? Monty? Anybody?

Re:aluminum heads
I think Cummins started using aluminum heads right after Ford bought controlling interest... [laugh] [laugh] [laugh]

Re:aluminum heads
Dodge has probably quit painting the engines now also :-[
so maybe it's cast iron without paint and looks like aluminum? ??? Seems it's VERY expensive for DC to paint driveshafts, frame rails etc... ::) |
Re:aluminum heads
Cummins does not make any engine in there lineup with aluminum heads. For that matter, I have never seen a Cummins engine with aluminum heads, from the B series, C series, ISM, ISL, ISX, BC series,VT903, KTA's, all NTC models for that matter.

Re:aluminum heads
Are their any pro's to using aluminum heads?? In a gasoline motor, one can bump up the compression because aluminum heads tend to detonate less, but thats not a pro for a diesel. In a gasoline motor, aluminum heads get the heat away from the combustion chamber quicker, but thats not a pro for a diesel.... What are the pro's?? Head Gasket change outs more often??

Dont the new 6.0 Powerjokes have AL heads?

Re:aluminum heads
Cummins does a clear coat on the engines. At least they do in IN. I was there at the nationals

Re:aluminum heads
The 2003 heads are cast iron. There is a riser between the head and the valve cover and that may be what people are looking at, assuming it is the head.

Re:aluminum heads
It was the riser that I had noticed at first glance. My apologies if I upset anyone thinking that a CTD would actually have an aluminum head. What the hell was I thinking? [eyecrazy]
