Just like the CTD in a Chev you probably won't see the Allison in a Dodge for a while. Chev had to physically alter the body in the floor tunnel to make room for the Allison and the 1000 series is the smallest they make. Another drawback is the 1000 Series has a 535 ft lb max torque rating so any upgrades could cost you big money in short order. Can you put one in, sure you can make anything go any where it just takes time and money. For less money and more torque capability go to a an Eaton auto shift twin counter shaft transmission full of real gears that does it's own thing. Mating it to a transfer case will be the challenge as the big trucks use drop boxes a system like the old T-cases with a shaft between the two. PK

The Cummins was the BEST idea they ever had . It would have been nice however if they had left it with cummins ECM instead of ????

Allison does make a tranny to mate to a 5.9. Buddy has a 96 motorhome on a Freightliner chasis. Has the ISB and a 6 speed Allison behind it, probably as someone said, too big for the tunnel. Would be a great combo, tho.

I emailed the guy to make sure he didn't do a trans. mod or something. This is what I got back:<br><br>
<br><br>I got a good laugh out of that one. Either way, I sent him a nice message about the tranny to set him straight. We'll see what kind of response I get back. I won'der if the dealer told this guy it was an Alison when he bought it.

I don't know if the Allison is the perfect tranny for a CTD or not. But one thing I do know is a 5 or 6 speed auto tranny would be nice. One thing that is always overlooked in the Chev D/A performance is the fact that the first gear is so low compared to the Dodge automatic. It helps them get out of the hole nice and fast and is the biggest single reason, stock vs stock, they're tough to beat performance wise.

I am not defending the 48RE because I have one but I will say this. The 48RE is a upgraded 47RE. This means they took all the problems the 47RE had and corrected them. I am sure Dodge paid attention to what the aftermarket was doing to beef the 47RE up and they incorporated alot of it into the 48RE. The 48RE surely won't be perfect but neither is the Allison so let's give it some time to prove itself.
Also, I read somwhere Dodge looked at the Allison for the '03 Rams but it didn't have a high enough input tourqe rating so they designed the 48RE instead.

yes they did actually buy and test at least one allison i bought the test unit with some other new dodge transmissions and there is daimlerchrysler decals and transmission test decals on it

Like I said the Allison 1000 Series has a limited torque rating and the Freightliner MH has a Series 2400 which allows them to use up to 350 HP and 900 ft lbs torque. You can own one too in Canada 1-Cummins ISB $18,300 + 1- Series 2400 Allison $20,000 and a Dodge truck = $70,000. Allison presently supplying all school buses, motor coaches, motor homes, and misc. industrial chassis + GM, they said I could have one 24-30 months down the road. $70k into a Dodge truck would pretty much Bomb it out. I contacted Reliable transmission in Indianapolis, the only Allison aftemarket licensed installer there. They will put a rebuilt Allison in my "96 for $4K+installation. I'll keep what I've got. Once I rebuilt it using all BD heavy duty parts and TC it performs great. Cost was $1,600 total one year ago at my local Cummins Authorized Repair Center.

Be very cautious which model trans these guys are offering to upgrade for 4k, they are probably not a model of Allison trans with an overdrive eg; AT 450,540,545 are all direct only and some are not 5 speeds. The four speeds have no low lift gear.PK
