7.3 PSD fuel filter caps blowing off...

Hi - a buddy of mine has a 2000 F450 work truck that keeps blowing the fuel filter cap off. This has happened with both Ford and aftermarket caps. He also mentioned that it seems to get really hot, compared to his 97 personal truck. He had this happen to him when he was out of town a while back, and the dealer that worked on it replaced the fuel pump, regulator, filter, and cap. He just had it blow again yesterday...

Any ideas? Too much fuel pressure, injector problems? I don't know if it's throwing any codes...

And yes, I've already posted this question over at thedieselstop.com :-)

Thanks guys...

What's his fuel pressure? Do you or him have a way to get a gauge hooked up even temporarly to monitor it while he's driving.

I don't know how much pressure it takes to blow the top of the filter off one of these, but there shouldn't be that kind of pressure in that area. There's 2 parts to the fuel pump, 1 part pulls fuel from the tank and pumps it through the filter, the 2nd part takes the filtered fuel and pumps it into the head. It comes out of the front of the head and into the regulator and should be regulated around 65 to 70 psi. Then it get returned to the tank via the return line.

Have him check the return line to make sure its not plugged.

BINGO!!! The regulator on the side of the fuel bowl that controls the pressure on the return needs to be replaced.

Ex Ford driver

It happened to me in Columbia Falls, Mt. one time. The truck had been sitting getting new tires for about 3 hours, and we had only driven about 4 miles when it blew. Scared the living hell out of me. The O ring was so distorted that I had to hitch into town and buy a new assembly. A logger in a Dodge diesel gave me a ride. Said he and his dad had Dodges and never had 1 problem. That's when I started planning on a new truck.
