454 to Cummins in 1981 Airstream Motorhome
454 to Cummins in 1981 Airstream Motorhome
This spring I bought a '81 Airstream MoHo with 60k miles on it. It has a Chev 454 that does just fine, but I want to put a diesel in it. The chassis is a Chev P-30; it's used for bread truck type applications- and a lot of motorhomes.
I actually plan on using up the rest of the 454's life, and I figure it will give out at around 100k. So it should take about 4-5 years, but until then I am going to arm myself with as much knowlege (and parts) as possible to make the conversion.
I've been reading for a couple hours now about all the conversions that have been done, but I'd love to see a full-on description of what it takes to do a repower like this.
I'm also trying to figure out which motor to use, and if I have the skills to do a 3rd gen transplant. I figure in 4-5 years the 3rd gen motors will be plentiful.
thanks for any direction any of you might have.

1) Not to be too much of a snot...Try search engines
2) http://fordcummins.com/ Yes, it's ford, but they list a checvycummins site, so they may be able to help.
I'm sure others will chime in!

I know, you're right. "look with your eyes, not your mouth" -My Dad's favorite quote. But I think I'm searching the wrong terms because I'm not finding what I'm looking for. Google; diesel, cummins, chevrolet, chevy, repower, conversion. I'm going to try chevycummins right now
Thanks!

That's a good one.
I've been to his website before, but I didn't see that page. There's not a link to it from the main page - I guess if you're selling stuff, you don't want all your projects and family photos up there. I'd like to find that guy next time I go up North; Tacoma is pretty close to me.
Thanks for all your help Gentlemen. You guys are finding this stuff way faster than I can for some reason. I appreciate it.

dont use fordcummins.com or chevycummins.com. they dont know what they are talking about. i tried to ask them some questions about some parts i needed for my truck, and they had no clue as to what i was talking about. it was some wiring or clutch questions when i converted to the NV4500.
Thanks for the tip.
