Re:24 V ENGINES
Probably the single biggest difference is the common rail fuel system on the 03's. This technology, if I have it right, allows for multiple injection events during the compression cycle. Because there's an initial "pilot" combustion, there's no sudden rise in cylinder pressure. The result is a quieter engine. Cummins refers to it a "socialibility"...Ha! . Longer oil drain intervals, sel-priming fuel system, quicker wait-to-start times. Also, there's a new breather system eliminating the most of the drips on the the driveway.

Re:24 V ENGINES
All 3rd Generation Cummins B's are an ECHO platform engine.
That is basically the ECHO style reinforced block.
It is mated with a Bosch Common rail fuel system, electronic injectors.
The Industrial/Commercial Engines are referred to as ECHO's.
They can have Variable Geometry turbo's, Wastegated turbo's.
Also they come with Delayed Exhaust Gas Recerculation systems.
The major difference in the ECHO engine is that the gear train is placed in the rear of the engine.
The Daimler Chrysler engine has the gear train placed in the front/traditional area.
Both displacements are still 5.9Liters, but they are redesigned and evolved other then that.
