What corners can they cut to reduce the price to about a third or fourth of what a truck would cost here? Are you thinking the only way to cut corners is cheapen the product? That is one way, but it won't get them that far. The cuts would be in labor, benefits, tax games, the exchange rate, startup incentives and maybe in using established technology wherever possible.

Labor is far cheaper in China and there is an excess labor force. Many factories house and feed the laborers. Neither the workers nor the factories have a high medical cost. The cost of living is drastically lower and people are willing ot make sacrifices to have a job in the city instead of just farming.

The ridulously low price is a common theme with Chinese products. It just doesn't make sense that things could be so cheap. But they are and continue to be. Over there they pay about the same price we do for Chinese made VWs and computers, but many other goods are so cheap it's just hard to believe. Over here it seems like they couldn't even pay for the fuel to ship the stuff and add a markup, not to mention the cost to produce the items. As though the materials and labor are free. Hard to figure, but it works.

That's Capitalism.

diesels arent really anything new over in the pacific rim. you can get nissan patrols (almost like a pathfinder), and several other light trucks and suv's with diesel engines. most are sub 3.0 displacement.

I loved the little 2.2L Isuzu diesel trucks in South Africa, along with the little diesel Land Cruisers -- not the luxury Yuppie rides of today, but the diesel jeep copies of yesterday -- tough as nails and drive almost anywhere. We kept the air pressure really low and crawled all over the bushveldt in them! I would love to get some of them here -- it just isn't right that we have to buy a 3/4 ton to get a good, reliable diesel truck in this country!

I asked my resident Chinese expert and she said the literal translation on that front tag is" Dawn Light Skin Clip" or "First Light Skin Clip". But the phonetic translation is "Dawn light Pickup Up" because the Chinese words Skin Clip sound like Pick Up in English. So, it's a Dawnlight Pickup.

One of these days we'll be asking our neighbor, "how's that new Dawnlight"?

And remember, in Chinese, our Dodges are called "Road Wonder Sheep Head" because Dodge is pronounced Dow Jee, which means Road Wonder in Mandarin. And the ram insignia is a sheep head.

What does that have to do with a fun translation?

The Chinese has a funny way of translating things. Actually seen little minivans in Shanghai with 'PutzMeister' emblems.

PutzMeister cracks me up. I've seen Putzmeister concrete pumps here. Does that mean they're a master at put, put, put? Maybe I need a new emblem on my Dodge.
