VT House Wants $.06 Fuel Tax Increase

Yes, that's per gallon and for gas, too.

"Gasoline and diesel prices could be going up 6 cents a gallon to help the state raise enough money so it can match a huge infusion of federal cash dedicated to roads, bridges and trains. The House Transportation Committee recommended the increases — which would put both taxes at 31 cents a gallon — Thursday by a 7-4 vote, along with a new formula that would dedicate some of the fuel tax revenues to helping cities and towns pay for their own networks of roads."

Even with the increase Vermont's taxes will be less than many states. Still not welcomed though.

How do the prices compare in New York and New Hampshire? Our fuel is usually between 6 and 10 cents higher in Kansas than OK. I live on the KS/OK line so I regularly drive over to OK and fill up. There's a truck stop in Copan that is about the cheapest around and it's only about 25 miles one way so If I buy 30 gallons I still don't come out but I'd rather drive it out than give it to the **** politicians to squander.

According to Infidel's tax link, NH is cheaper, but in NY, gas is higher, but diesel is lower than VT.

I've gone Carlisle, PA, the past three years and there's a Flying J there. I check thier site to compare it to current prices here in MA. Right now, they're $0.15 cheaper which is ironic because their state tax for diesel is $0.171 HIGHER.

An Update

"MONTPELIER, Vt. --The House gave final approval to the transportation budget Friday, sending its proposal for increasing gasoline and diesel fuel taxes on to a skeptical Senate and a scornful governor."

"The House's response was to raise motor vehicle fees by $7.3 million and then raise the rest by increasing the gasoline tax by 4 cents to 24 cents and the diesel fuel tax by 6 cents to 32 cents."

"We are headed for trouble," Westman said, mentioning that 533 bridges out of 2,600 longer than 20 feet were structurally deficient. "When we go home today, nearly a quarter of the bridges you drive over will be structurally deficient. Transportation has not been a priority as much as it should have been. ... I don't care where you get the revenue. Transportation needs help."
