Just my $0.02

Just as several have claimed mileage increases, and some no change, with ULSD...

Hemi Dart 12-03-2006 06:06 PM

This past summer w/ engine fan on:

B20, 500 PPM #2, 646 miles/29 Days = 20.07 MPG

Last fill. Engine fan off for winter, A/C compressor disabled, New Fluidampr, "Winter blend" fuel, temps between 25°-60°:

50 PPM ULSD, 659 miles/31 Days = 20.76 MPG

All fills include my additive stack of Amalgamated/Amsoil Cetane Boost & Fuel Power 60.

NO loss in mileage w/ ULSD here. :) Very, Very pleased!

a77ssii 12-03-2006 07:32 PM

Started with 20.1MPG on old #2, made the switch to ULSD 18.6MPG. Added a blend of Amsoil and 2 stroke, up to 19.8 and smoke is invisible during the day but at night in the headlight behind me!!![guitar] WOOHOO!! People stay a good 250' minimum from me. Don't even need the night setting on the rear view anymore.

Gunrunner 12-03-2006 07:44 PM

Could this sudden decrease in mileage for everyone have anything to do with the winter blend of diesel as in the past? Don't know when they switch to the winter fuel or if they even do with this new stuff, just curious

MikeyB 12-04-2006 07:43 AM

My fuel economy has stablized somewhat. Still getting over 20mpg running 75mph but around town mileage is still down. Also noticed a difference in economy between the different brands of ULSD. My best is with Murphy (Walmart) and the worst so far is with Chevron.

whitebuffalo 12-04-2006 08:00 AM

i have not had any recognizable change in mileage from lsd to ulsd.

XLR8R 12-04-2006 08:15 AM

Yeah - neither have I.

bobbywebb 12-06-2006 02:47 AM

I live in Kansas, and the new ULSD Diesel fuel is here at every CO-OP, BIO Diesel is 34 miles one way to get. My 01 Dodge 3500 has had 3 tanks of ULSD and so far no problems. My ? is why does the pump say not to run in anything older than 07 Engine or it will cause engine damage.

Haulin_in_Dixie 12-06-2006 04:36 AM

According to OOIDA as of October all fuel feed lines had to be 80% ULS. It takes a while to flush out the lines and tanks, so they can't advertise the new stuff until it is pure.

My N14 lost the better part of a mpg in the last month or so. The mileage is worst at Flying J (ipoff)

Geico266 12-06-2006 05:23 AM

I think it is winter blends causing the drop in MPG, but I can't be sure yet. Every year we see people complaining about a drop in MPG this time of year and they blame it on everything from batteries to airfilters. It is the blending of the fuel to keep it from gelling (at the pump) that changes the fuel to lower the MPG.

JMHO.

XLR8R 12-06-2006 08:48 AM

Are you sure the label doesn't read the other way around?

- Don't use LSD in '07 or newer vehicles?

2500 12-06-2006 09:01 AM

mine has gone down from 22 to 17

So what can I say when the fule I use is straight #2 ULSD, it has no #1 in it (our Arctic Diesel that is made in MN with anti-gel additivies added to it) and my mpg has dropped 2 mpg. I even plug my truck in and have a Dodge winter front on it to so I don't have to warm it up before go.

My $0.02

Sgt. Peper 05-13-2008 10:01 AM

I got my MPG's back when I started using Lucas. An increase of 2 to 3 MPGs and my trucks runs smother and has more power. More than pays for itself.

2500 05-13-2008 12:02 PM

check out prices noted at start of this thread.... $2.79 vs current $4.09 in tulsa. this is on top of mileage drops..

have switched to running 50% motor oils, my power is up and mileage is back up.

Say goodbye to 18-19mpg around town and hello to 15-16mpg. [verymad]

I have been using Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant and thought it was a great product. I read a new study on Lubricity Additives on dieselplace.com and think I may be wasting my money. Anybody have any comments on that study? I have never even heard of Opti-Lube XPD but am thinking of trying it after reading this study.

Just started using Opti-Lube Summer Blend with this tank of fuel. I have over 400 miles on this tank and the overhead seems to be indicating about .5-1 mpg gain even with some idling and a 2 short tows (20 miles) with 3000 lbs

I have been obtaining 21.1 to 21.2 hand calculated for the last couple 400-500 mile tanks. Will fill up in a few days and advise if the Opti-Lube is all it is cracked up to be. It does seem a bit quieter...

johnny5.9 07-17-2008 09:01 PM

My truck hardly ever sees ULSD unless I'm really low and don't think I'll make it to the truck stop where I get LSD. On the few occasions I have filled the truck with ULSD the truck DRINKS it. I have not calculated the difference but it is noticeable just from how fast it disappears.

opti-lube and stanadyne additives (among others) have a high solvent content, and some believe that additives with a high solvent content will cause long term damage to injectors and pumps. BTW increased fuel mileage is not necessarily a good way to judge the quality of an additive, because a product with lots of acetone will give you better mileage, but too much acetone can damage your fuel system.

DBLR 07-21-2008 10:31 AM

I like Lucas for how well it cleans up the fuel system (not for lubing to the fuel system) and the small amount of fuel mileage increase I see when I do use it.

Roperteacher 07-21-2008 02:02 PM

My truck really liked The Opti Lube XPD , saw excelent mileage gains, then she started to hate it. Rough Idle after towing etc... So far my truck kind of hates all additives. I have had the Best luck with Howes and Lucas. Less solvents I think. For the most part, I just run good ol #2

ThatGuy34 07-21-2008 02:57 PM

i too have ran the opti-lube xpd. i didnt see any mileage gain, but my truck seemed to run better in the winter with it. once it got warm i switched to 2-stroke oil. seem to have gotten a small mpg gain from that (little under 1 mpg)

5.9 or 6.7?

i believe the Howes and Lucas additives do have little or no solvents added. i like the fact that when you smell them, they don't smell like paint thinner, like most of the other additives.

bowlerman 07-22-2008 03:41 PM

ulsd burns more then high sulphur

I ran it for 649.9 miles in this tank, 29.399 gallons to the filler neck, 22.106 mpg.

Haulin_in_Dixie 07-24-2008 01:16 AM

I have to say one thing for Howes. Twice on my red top cummins I have had an injector start hammering, just like a ball peen hammer, stopped at the thruck stop, dumped a bottle of Howes in it, a few minutes later, quite and running smoothe.

BigErksG2 07-23-2009 02:35 PM

I tried the acetone in my daily driver civic; mpg's are up 7% and the check engine light went off after about 3/4 of the tank. I may have been a little heavy on the acetone for this tank but ill try a weaker ratio for the next one and get the expected 10-12%, we will see.

johnh 08-09-2009 09:13 AM

at a local station the off road pump says ULSD so i guess it's ok to use in the newer trucks (off road of course)[coffee]

6spd05Dually 10-04-2012 09:34 PM

Mikey,

I am still getting the same mpg as I have been. I buy diesel all over the place. I have been consistently getting 19.2-19.8(hand calculated) empty in my truck. Towing I get 9 to 11 mpg.

I don't drive 75mph down the highway either and take off easy at stops in town. I don't really think it's the fuel causing your drops. Maybe your heavy foot?[laugh]

dieselluvr 09-27-2013 11:25 PM

Well I have to admit I run WVO most of the time and could care less what fuel economy I get with ULSD or the other but I haven't noticed any difference in performance or fuel economy on the rare occasion I do run diesel but then again I'm a firm believer in adding a quart of used motor oil to each fillup and Power Service (summer blend).

That's amazing mileage especially with six tires on the ground. I don't get that empty w/four. Our G-56 0.79 final drive yields the equivalent of a 4.11 in the autos.

wiskeyVI 12-04-2013 10:07 PM

I've been stuck running ulsd for some time but this years winter mix SUCKS!
I'm getting the worse mileage I've ever gotten and It doesn't run well on it even using Howes.

ubet 12-06-2013 07:04 PM

I think my truck would run better on the coffee I make in the morning than this winter diesel I've been getting
