Just got a e-mail from a friend in Las Vagas with a 2008 4500 Dodge. He was asking about Ethanol Diesel Fuel. Me being on the Right Coast never heard of Diesel mixed with Ethanol.

He called the Dodge dealer and ask if Ethanol Diesel could be run. Answer NO.
Dodge said the same thing about Bio diesel. ??

Anyone using it? How does it run? Mileage?

Anything out there eventually makes it here.

Boy thats a new one on me. I've been hauling fuel for 29 yrs & have seen all the changes in the industry but ethanol in diesel wouldn't be good. For one alcohol would take out any lubricating properties in the diesel & the seals in your injection pump wouldn't like that very long. So where did this info come from?

A wee bit off topic. There is diesel out there blended with Natural Gas. Tankeryanker Glen and I have read about it on a different site and a friend of ours has used it. Its primarily in the NW USA. It does hold some merit.

 

Small amounts of normally gaseous components like propane or even methane added to gasoline or diesel improve the cold temperature ignition properties of the fuel. Makes cold weather starting easier.

Only usable in cold weather, it evaporates off too fast causing hydrocarbon pollution in warm weather.

 

I cannot find the site but there is a company that is 'infusing' natural gas into diesel fuel and its for sale at the pumps in the northwest USA. School bus fleets have been using it with great results. I'll try and find the site.

My friend over in Idaho filled his factory tank and his aux tank in Nevada and found it to have better throttle response under heavy load...towing but no mpg improvement.

 

Now if they would use methanol instead of ethanol, all we'd need to add is water injection

 

Bah, I wish they would hurry up and figure out how to grow Diesel trees in areas other than the Equatorial regions or swamps..........

I could go for tapping a tree to fill my tank.

 

That's a polymerization process of some kind. It isn't natural gas any more, but larger molecules similar to diesel oil that will blend with diesel and burn well with it.

Natural gas going to blow the top off the fuels market yet. Good to see.

If we can just get the detractors out of the oil and gas fields, we'd be in another boom time fer sure.

 

Ethanol @ 15% by volume ? With the carbon make up of diesel, it's short of pouring gasoline in the tank @ the same volume, with less btu's.

Until there is an independent study published by a non-invested company, I'd be somewhat leary.

 

I'm with you. Even with the 5% bio we are using here which adds some lubtricity to the fuel I still use an additive in my Dodge. But then again I have a million miles on my work truck without any additive. So maybe I'm just waisting my $$.

 

One drawback to Ethanol diesel is the fact that Ethanol attracts water (ask boat owners how well they like ethanol in their gas) and we all know that water is no friend to injectors or our fuel systems.

 

The only thing I recommend blending ethanol with is Ruby Red Squirt! Yummm!
