With diesel at $3 a gallon, is it wise to switch from a gasser?
I don't remember exactly. Seems like it was a few things. Seems like slightly different heads, slightly different piston shape, and of course fuel mapping. And the ETC had a different clutch assembly. At least a different clutch in 2001. The ETC clutch was supposed to be more durable overall.
I don't know what the 'C' stands for but I think the 'H' was for the H.O. The ETC and ETH were engine codes. Not sure if its in the VIN or not, but is definitly in the build code. Other guys on here know this stuff WAY better than me.
The ETH clutch assembly was supposedly changed to make the push a bit easier or something, don't know the specifics, but lots of ETH guys complained about a slipping clutch with just mild bombs. I still have my original clutch and have been mildly bombed for a LONG time.
Some of the above may be wrong, but it is what I remember.

Is it worth it? In my case, yes. My truck is also my company truck and I pull trailers and carry drums and pressure washers. My avg. mpg to date stands at 18.878
On Toyota trucks. My buddy has a lease (may have gotten rid of it by now) Tacoma 4cyl 5 speed that gets at best 22mpg. It also is about as fun to drive as a Yugo. It doesn't rev and it doesn't make much torque.
My neighbor bought a Tundra V6 Auto for commuting to Houston and he complains that it wont do much over 20mpg.
My Dad drives a 2001 1500 with the 318/Auto and gets about 16.5 but that thing hunts gears BAD on the semi-hills around here.
My boss drives a 1999 F250 5.4/auto that gets about 14.5 and hunts just as much as the Ram 1500.
If I could afford a second vehicle I'd VERY much like a TDI Jetta! 40+ mpg EASY!
But any of the smaller gasser cars such as Civics, Corollas and Mazda 3s should get 30 hwy.
