As they should, because when they don't make money, thousands of workers are out of their jobs. So the next time you say that, remember that fact.

Ya know, it scares the HELL out of me how ANGRY people are at people who make wealth for their company or their lives. It's really amazing to me. I have to wonder though, are they really angry at the person it's directed to, or angry at themselves and have too low a self-esteem to admit it?

Yeah, and how do you think Bio Diesel came to pass? RESEARCH!!! This statement cracks me up! Here you are talking about something that took millions of man hours to research, yet you ask what research needs to be done? Someone please tell me where this makes sense.

They are out to make a buck and that is it.
Well of course they are!!!! Isn't that why business exists? Isn't it how we make a living? Isn't it what keeps this country running?

I will tell you the ONE thing that keeps this country running. PROFIT! PERIOD. Get used to it and quit crying because it's not going away, and without it, we would all be living in a barren land with nothing but the clothing we make for ourselves and nothing to eat but what we kill. IF we were lucky enough to find something...

I don't think I have cried about them making a profit or argued they shouldn't.

I am not saying the profits didn't help pay for the research. If they are looking for an alternative what else needs to be done? Dang.

Do I agree that prices are too high? Of course I do. I'm not saying that. I think they should be much lower, but people who give this kind of argument are just ... well.... angry because someone out there is doing well and somone out there is becoming wealthy. That is what our country was founded on, the right to pursue happiness however you want to. Why be angry because some people do it better than others? Instead of being angry and negative, go pursue your own wealthy, and smile like the others!

Oh yes, and of course we all know that George Bush IS the root of all evil!

You're exactly right. When my friend and I finally perfect our Mr. Fusion device (remember the movie 'Back to the Future') we're going to sell them a) at a profit, and b) put a portion of that profit back into research. The rest of it we'll spend on wine, women and song :-)

Wouldn't THAT be cool to be the inventor of the Mr. Fusion, where you could run your vehicle off the energy stored in a freakin banana peel? Whoever comes up with that will rule the world.

Now back to my lab....

Not all that far fetched really not too many years ago people said man would never fly. Reading some of Herb's reply's make me believe he is cruising at 40,000 ft and never leaving the ground

Actually I too respect Herb for standing his ground, no matter how misguided he may be ...at least he doesn't flip flop to the latest whim he stands by his conviction and that makes him OK with me

Just to see if I can stir the pot a little more. How much do you think the likes of Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace and every other hardware and home repair center's profit rose? I would be very interested to know those figures and hear some feedback on this subject. I wonder if any one of us worked for one of the oil companies or Home Depot......, if we would be upset about the profits since so many companies have profit sharing programs that are not reflected in these quarterly profit numbers. Just some food for thought, I am not taking a stand either way just trying to expand the thread a little.

This deserves to be expanded upon.

Poor people do not make jobs. Poor people do not have employees. They don't have housekeepers or gardeners, and they don't run a business that has employees, either.

Don't envy the rich. Because, for the most part, they have done NOTHING that you couldn't have done, too. You could have started Microsoft. You could have invented Google or started AOL. You could have ventured out and started up a satellite radio or TV company. You could have come up with the idea for Ebay or Amazon.com.

There's an awful myth in this country-- that rich people only got rich because they were "lucky." They were born to rish parents. They "won life's lottery" according to Dick Gephardt.

But this is false. The majority of wealthy people got that way because they EARNED IT. They went to the 500 auditions before being discovered as a movie star. They went to school and worked 3 jobs so they could complete their doctoral thesis. They took out a HUGE loan and took a huge risk gambling that they could make a business like Amazon.com work.

Michael Dell wasn't born rich. He got that way because he started a business and grew it with his own sweat.

Jeff Bezos didn't inherit wealth. Neither did Bill Gates, Garth Brooks, Paul Allen, Steve Jobs, or Meg Whitman (Ebay CEO).

The age of the Vanderbilts, the Carnegies, Rockefellers, and all the "old Guard" American wealth is over. Yes, they are still rich, and yes they will be for many generations. Same with Ford, Firestone, and other prominent American families.

But the wealthy families represent a very tiny percentage of the population. Yet we take this top 1% of income earners and lambast them for doing the very thing that made America great.

America didn't become the world's most powerful economy by sitting back and waiting for someone else to do something. We got where we are by taking risks-- by innovating. We are successful because our system offers the hope of BIG rewards to those who take BIG risks.

But alas-- we have become so comfortable that we are no longer happy with even basic risks. We expect the gov't to supply us with prescrption meds and take care of us in our retirement years. We demand exorbitant sums of money when something bad happens to us.

- How many family members of the 9/11 victims gave the money back?
- How many Katrina evacuees declined the FEMA money?

The point being that people won't even accept the responsibility of providing for THEMSELVES in emergency situations. If we can't accept the "risk" of buying our own insurance, or having a safety evacuation plan, how can we accept the risk of bankruptcy and personal financial ruin in an effort to start a company??

The people who have my pity are those who are truly victims-- those stricken with Cancer or some other horrible disease, or those who are victimized by something completely unforseeable. Even then, can you forsee cancer if you smoke 2 packs a day? Can you forsee devastation given modern weather technology?

The bottom line is that the prosperity we enjoy in this country has eliminated all but just a tiny handful of excuses. I'd be so bold as to say that if you aren't making $100K a year, it's by choice. I'm glad that many choose not to, as we need teachers and military members and such. But it IS a choice! Somewhere along the line you chose to play games instead of do homework-- you chose to party in college instead of read an assignment, or chose to have sex (and the accidental pregnancy) instead of plan for your future. You may have chosen to pursue luxuries instead of further your skillset marketability. There's nothing wrong with that, as our country is free. But it also means that you chose your station in life.

I will never look down on someone who makes 30K a year and lives modestly and happily. It's the person that makes 30K then complains about everyone else making 100K, even as they attempt to live well beyond the means of their 30K income.

Never mind what that rich guy is doing. Take care of yourself. In fact, you'll probably benefit from the work that rich guy is doing-- through a stronger economy and such.

So don't begrudge the wealthy. Be thankful for them-- for the people who chose not the be wealthy. Be thankful that you live in the US, and have unbounded opportunity-- don't be bitter because that same unbounded opportunity means that it's YOUR FAULT if you haven't taken advantage of it!!!

That's my opinion.
