Why don't you crush the filters (press out the rest of the oil)
And take the smashed can to your steel scrap .

Thats a good option! I made a filter crusher out of a log spliter! It smashed them down to about 1" so I could get 5x the amount of filters in the barrel. I think 98% of the oil came out(sometimes all over me).
The barrel weighed about 400 pounds or more and the recycler hated to pick them up because they weighed so much more than he expected. They finally said that they would pick them up for free if I stopped crushing them
I am not sure what they do with cars when the crush them but I am sure that they don't drain the rears and std trannys when the crush em.
Dropping them around town is going to be a hassel. You are going to be getting sooo many filters that you are going to probably get talked to.
I found plans on the net about backyard forging... you could melt them down in to cubes and them take them to Kyle field.

oilguy,

Maybe I could put together a recycling barrel for my subdivision. I could put a couple 55 gallon barrels in some kind of covered enclosure by the community center. As a "service to the community". I could sell the homeowner's association on it. They would probably even promote it in the newsletter. I could have some signs made up to promote it for passing cars. Allow people to deposit oil, no used filters. I'm a little concerned that someone might put who knows what into them though. Perhaps all that would "cook out" anyway.

What do ya think?

BTW: You're being awful kind to answer all my question! Thanks!

krustyck - I run it through afterward to make sure that it is clean going into the fuel tank.
Barryn - That would be a good idea it people in your neighborhood actually change their own oil... I will bet that you will have better success if you talk with mechanics and set a barrel for them to use. Home owners assoc's are pretty nosey usually... they are going to start asking questions like>>>>
What are you going to be doing with the used oil?
What are the EPA standards for disposal?
along will all the questions that have been posted in this forum...
Small mechanic shops will help you to stay under the radar and supply you with WMO.

1. I did some more checking and found out that the city has a hazardous waste collection center for stuff like this. I looked on the list of approved items and oil filters were on there, along with batteries, used oil (I'll take that), misc. chemicals, and the usual offending items. It showed that they recycle the oil and filters. I wonder how they recycle the filters, what they do with them, and if I should be interested in doing it as well?

I think I'll pass by there this week and make sure. If that's the case I guess I could wait until I have a 55 gallon barrel full of filters and then go drop them off.

2. The shop by my house has a 350 gallon cube outside that they got from their present collection company. He told me I could come by and suck out the oil just like they do. I guess Northern Tool or someone similar would have a pump that I could use to suck it into some 55 gallon barrels that I had in my pickup bed or on a trailer.

BTW oilguy: How did you come across this? I'm constantly amazed at the stuff I see people finding on eBay.

Option 3 would probably be the easiest to pull off, plus it has some monetary benefit for me as well.

Barry
I think not.

I have been working lately to save a LOT of money to buy a new house and have been distracted from the diesel plant. I have been working on some new designs for the plant to make it work better for me but I have not been running it. Kinda stupid on my part but I am so spread out (which is why I want the new house). This time change is killing me too! It gets dark tooo early!

1. How many have already bought these plans?
2. How many have already built this?
3. Did you pay with PayPal or Western Union?

Are there any advantages in choosing between Western Union or PayPal?

I got the plans yesterday, I paid via CC with Paypal. No different than paying for any other Ebay purchase.

It'll take a little time to read thru all the posts in the private forum and make adjustments based on trial and error before jumping in prematurely. Rework sucks so it's better to be well advised for the first go-round.

If anybody still doubts, hey that's up to you. After buying the plans and seeing the pictures as well as reading the discussions all I can say is "Believe it" I'm not trying to spend your money though and nobody else can make up your mind.

No experience with the still set up(yet, maybe) but I would think that since WVO is not petroleum based, it wouldn't work.

It might work if you have alot of fries to make

----hijack------

I see you're in Waynesboro. I've heard of it but can't place it. How close are you to Harrisburg? I'm just south of Hburg, near Lancaster.

Good luck with the build. I'm contemplating but am almost finished with a new house and don't have the time to invest in it yet. Maybe this winter. I need a big heater for my barn anyway. This might kill 2 issues with one furnace.

----end of hijack----

I wouldn't try WVO as you only need to heat it to 120deg F mixed with methenol or ethenol for that type af heat you can buy a 40 gal propane water heater for about $190.00 pipe it run a batch transfer to 55 gal drum coolit let it set for about 3 or four days seperate the gunk and wa-la you have a product. OH I forgot to filter it to about 3 microns and convert Auto with extra filters tank heater etc. also you need alot a to set and baby sit the process.
