What Gear for pulling???

Thinking about running in a few local pulls around here this next season and I'm looking for some advice. I have a 2002 Ram 2500 HO with a 6 speed. The truck has 285 / 75-15 all terrain tires. I will be adding a 5" exhaust and an intake.

The questions I have are:

Tire pressure?

High or low on the transfer case?

What gear on the tranny?

Is there a particular ground speed that I should look for and pick a gear accordingly?

Any other pointers or advice???

Thanks,

JSF

Tire pressure? - 15~20 psi

High or low on the transfer case? - low

What gear on the tranny? - 3rd

Any other pointers or advice??? - sounds like your trying to take you clutch out. because you will if you dont be careful!
if your going to pull on the stock clutch, use 2nd on the low side. Wont get as far, but its better than dropping the nv5600!

Thanks,

JSF

...only thing i know is that most guys launch with the gear that gives them 1:1 ...with the 5 speed its 3rd...they rev it up nice and high to build tons of boost and launch with some slipping of the clutch in 4H...the truck stays in that gear the whole way

i have pulled a couple of times and scored some first but i have a 5 speed and i pulled in 3 gear which was said, the valair clucth does not like that either, but i have pulled with a guy with a 6 speed he had a comp,150 jammers, intake and exhaust, dual disk SB with 37" MTs pulles in 4 gear low, i usaully run 12 psi in the tires and put some blocks in between the rear axleand the stops so they just touch the rubber so you will still have 1" of supension (dont tell any one) and put a big bummper off the front

6 speed with 4.10's, a good clutch, and decent power....4th low
6 speed with 3.55's, a good clutch, and low to decent power....3rd low

Direct drive (1:1) is 5th on a 6-speed or 4th on a 5-speed. This should only be used in low range. It takes a good bunch of power, a good clutch, and quite a bit of slip (on a good midwestern clay track) to make it work. And it isn't really a 1:1 because of the transfer case reduction. There is no way I would ever try high range in any gear approaching direct drive.

1:1 in a 5 speed is 4th gear, I don't think you would do any good in high. I think most people use 3rd low or maybe 4th low. When I sled pull I plan on using 3rd gear Low...

JSflagstad,

I wouldnt even bother sledpulling with stock power.

If you do run 2nd gear low range on the transfer.

I'm going to have to disagree guys. I did about 5 pulls on my stock clutch. All in 3rd low. The key is dont slip the clutch. What I did was bring the RPM's up to about 1800 and start letting the clutch out. It would slip a little but not much. It worked pretty good. This was with a PM2.

Agreed!! No point in tearing stuff up when you havent got a chance in winning.

Don't Bother??

In my area, the pulls I have went to to watch, they have classed all of the pickups by weight regardless if they were gas or diesel. From what I have seen there is a stock class (Intake and exhaust) and then a mod street (chips, Intake, and exhaust) class and then a full mod class. The stock class is usually flooded with lots of gassers with a few diesels sprinkled in and 99% of the time the diesel take the win.

I am just in it to have some fun, as I'm sure all of you are. I drag raced for years and even won a national title and didn't make a dime, but I sure had fun and I'm sure that pulling is much the same.

Must be nice to pull in an actual stock class. Around here a "street" stock diesel class starts at about 500-600 hp with some just being trailer queens.

Amen to that!!! Wait, that's me...lol

js-- Don't bother on a stock clutch. Put a DD in it if you want to pull, if you don't, you'll be trailering home.
