To the track...
To the track...
So I'm takin the dodge to the drag strip today. Two of my friends have Durasmacks all bombed to heck, and wanted me to come along and see what a stock cummins can do. If nothing else $10.00 for the day full of runs, is a good way to get out of work on a friday and have fun. No hard launches or anything crazy for me, this truck is my only driver, and I can't afford any downtime due to me being stupid
. I'm lofting up the goal of breaking into the 16's. When I get back I'll post up how we did. I know I wont stand a snowballs chance against my friends durasmacks, his last run at the track was 13.2, and he went into limp mode for the last few hundred feet!

Yup, ben smoked me... He put a custom tune on my other friends Chebby, and it ran a 14.9. As for my stock 6 banger....couldnt seem to break the 18 second mark...and wow has my reaction time has slowed since the last time i raced. but i did make a lot of racket sitting in the staging area

I thought that stock, they were upper 16s. Mine was only stock for like two weeks, but it felt pretty much as fast as the HEMI I traded in. The HEMI ran 16.27 best and mostly 16.4s the one day I had it to the track.
I dont know if its supposed to be quicker stock, but my times were all very consistent (after I removed my reaction times) I only saw a few hundreths of a second distance between my best and worst time. It is an auto, which may be the reason its slower than you remember yours being.
That is slow. I had an '04.5 4wd auto 2500, quadcab shortbed with 3.73's. Launching against the converter with some boost in 4hi, I got a 16.48 out of it at 80 mph. Several runs were made with results right around that. The launching against the converter part may have accounted for most of the difference between your results and mine. That truck was STONE stock by the way. I know because I bought it new.
I ran my wife's '05 quadcab hemi down the track. It's a 2wd with the 3.92's and the short bed. It went 15.50 at somewhere around 84 or 85 mph. Again, stone stock as we bought it new.
Here's where it gets interesting: A buddy of mine has another '05 hemi ram. But, this one is a standard cab short bed 2wd, with the 3.55's. It has the lighter 17" wheels, too. He took the air filter off, took the tailgate off, and removed the spare tire. Other than that, stone stock-no programmer or anything. It went 14.94 at 86 or so mph. I swear to God, I saw it with my own two eyes last night. I think the hemi is ill-suited for quadcab 4x4 trucks. They're too heavy, and the hemi doesn't make very much torque or power until it revs up. Putting enough gear in them to get a heavy one moving quickly results in poor mileage. It is MUCH better suited to the cars that DC installs it in. By pretty much all normal measures, the hemi is actually a quite good engine.

Here is how I ran, maybe there is something up with my truck, it did feel like it was lagging getting up to RPM.
Launched in 2wd (the tires will break free before something expensive breaks)
Power braked against the T.C. up to about 1600-1700 rpm
Had O.D. kicked off
I made runs both with the truck in Drive, and letting it shift on its own and me maually holding the gears, with very similiar results.
All accessories were off (a/c), bed was completely empty Tailgate was up
I still have my winter grille on, which covers roughly half the stock grille (it was 35 degrees today)
All runs were with the engine up to operating temp and the tranny was in gear or neutral the entire time in the staging lanes to keep the tranny fluid warm and circulating
Any thoughts? Is there something I should be checking out? The truck only has 15000 miles on it now (yep thats right, 15000 miles on a '02)

Go on and launch it in 4wd if your truck has it. Also, leave the transmission in regular mode-don't lock out overdrive. If it needs it, it's there. You may have simply run up against the rev limiter in 3rd.
