Strapping the front end is usually done by the D-Max guys to prevent Tie Rods from breaking. I've never seen it done or heard of it done on a solid front axle truck
It can be done, the trick is to ensure you don't compress it so much it screws up your pinion and transfer case angles, when the rear end squats. Takes some trial and error. You might look at air pressure adjustments as well and some new shocks. I have seen several gas pullers us it on leaf spring front ends. Around here not many people pull with 1st gens and the coil and control arms take care of most of it.
