Sled pulling hitch question
Sled pulling hitch question
When it says "Reese style hitch recommended" what are they referring to? I'm doing my 2nd pull tomorrow, first in over 4 years and I need to pick up a hitch, I think, before I head out there. This is what the rules say about the hitch:
"D1. Hitch height to be no more than 26” at point of hook before, during and after pull and no closer
than 36% of the wheel base to the center point of the rear end. Hitch must be rigid in all directions
and solidly mounted. Pulling point can be no more than 1 ½ inches from back edge of hitching
device. No clevis, chains or cable allowed in hitching device. Hitch must be attached to frame.
Reese type hitch recommended. If ring type, MUST BE HORIZONTAL"

they are saying that whatever hitch you are using it must be the type that will slide into a 2" receiver and be secured with a pin. it cant be a custom wleded set-up with draw bars coming from way up front on the frame etc. it needs to be a hitch of some sort that bolts to the frame with a 2" receiver on it, and then the actual pulling hitch slides into it.
I bought a lunette ring with adjustable holes like this http://www.truckspring.com/productin...=63021&affid=1 and welded it onto 2 in. tube steel and used 1" plate for a gusset. You can buy a hitch from pure diesel power. http://www.puredieselpower.com/catal...ch-p-2965.html
Wow 400 bucks, looks like I might be teaching myself to weld, wouldn't something like this work?

I'm not sure of the size of that ring though. I know here the rules state only 3" ring needed, the big time pulls say 3.75, but none of those are around here.

If you're gonna go that route get a regular drop hitch and a twisted clevis from a tractor supply store. something like this:http://www.hoober.com/product_details.asp?pn=M8295

It depends how competive you want to be. A regular twisted clevis works fine, but with the sled hook in there sideways it doesnt raise the pan to your advantage. I got a BF Hitch that I modified to make the hook twist upwards an raise the pan just a little more. You wouldnt think so, but at my test an tune I pulled with a clevis, an then my hitch to prove a point. I pulled 8ft 7in farther just cuz my hitch is able to raise the pan just enough off the line to get that extra couple feet. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
